Stock sandwich plate only circulates the bypass oil through the cooler and returns it back to the oil pan (you'll need to add the oil return to a smallport engine or use a bigport oil pan) . It's a good system for a car which is mostly used on street and maybe sees some light trackday use.
For an engine which sees heavier use, it's preferable to use a sandwich plate that runs all oil through the cooler and then back into the engine's lubrication system. The sites Ron linked both sell these types of plates. If you buy one with an internal thermostat (to bypass the cooler when the engine is still cold), make sure that it's small enough to fit to the 4A-GE block. I have an older Setrab sandwhich plate with a thermostat and it didn't fit properly because of the oil pressure sensor, coolant drain plug and the engine mount. To make it fit, I had to make small adapter ring in a lathe and use a longer center bolt to raise the sandwich plate slightly off the block.
