I use the last active threads thing all the time, works like a charm.

Hmmm, the "New posts since last visit" and "New threads since last visit" are both available as links (only when logged in) which should provide both a 50 topics per page overview of all new posts (per topic) or all new topics since your last visit. Or is this not what you mean?
