Igniter / Coil problems

Checking coil and igniter function....
You could try this (shamelessly lifted from http://www.toyspeed.org.nz) to test
the igniter output function :
Quote:To test the wiring.

1. Unplug the engine wiring loom from the ECU.
2. Turn the ignition ON.
3. Use a test light with about a 12v 4watt bulb. Clip the lead onto
a 12V positive supply. Touch the probe of the test light onto the
IGN1 wire in the ECU plug (the wire that goes to the igniter).

The coil should spark as you make and break the circuit with the
testlight. If not, then you have a wiring, coil or igniter problem.

Just to reinforce... Do this test with the ECU unplugged.
Do not probe power into the ECU. Probe it into the plug you have
pulled out of the ECU.
This test applies a low level signal to the igniter trigger circuit, which
in turn switches the coil to produce a spark. It does not check the
igniter flyback signal, which confirms to the ECU that an ignition event
has occurred.
