A Corolla is the crown of a flower.
Japanese say Ka-Ro-Ra (rhymes with aurora according to Eiji Toyoda).
Australians say Co-Roll-La.

Corolla 1# 1st generation
Japan’s growing middle class thought the Publica (Toyota’s entry level car in the early 1960’s) was too boring while the Crown and Corona were too expensive for them.
At this time, a Toyota engineer called Tatsuo Hasegawa had noticed that the Opel Kadett was doing very well in Germany.
The Kadett was a very light car that looked good, was fun to drive and was replacing the VW beetle as the car to have in Germany.
Hasegawa designed the Corolla around the same ideas as the Kadett.
It was sized between the Publica (700cc) and Corona (1500cc), looked classy, had modest power, yet was economical and inexpensive.
Management originally wanted to use an existing 1000cc engine but it was heavy and low powered.
Management only let them design a new engine as long as they could find a use for the old engine in another product
– so they put it in a truck.
The Nissan Sunny (also called the Datsun 1000) was to be released a few months earlier than the Corolla with a new1000cc
A10 engine, so Toyota ordered the engineers to increase the engine by 100cc.
This was hard to do so late in the design scedule but it was done.
It also raised the Corolla into the next tax class but this gave it more prestige with Japan’s growing middle class.
It was advertised as “the 100cc advantage” and “the extra 100cc gives extra comfort”.
At the time, Japanese owners prefered a 3 speed column shift – more gears meant more gear changing
(a sign of a weak engine) and floor shifts were for trucks.
But America was going to 4 speed floor shifts, so Toyota decided to go with the new trend before other Japanese companies did.
The new factory was built with the latest automated and computerised facilities.
Lower production costs reduced its selling price to Y432,000 – 5% lower than the Sunny (Datsun 1000).
Combined with disc brakes, 4 speed floor shift and MacPherson suspension, it outsold the Sunny by 35%.
The Corolla was sold under 2 names – “Corolla” and “Sprinter”.
The Corolla was offered as a 4 door sedan, a 2 door sedan and a 2 door van but not as a fastback coupe.
The Sprinter (never called a Corolla but sharing most parts) was offered only as a fastback coupe.
Corolla’s first export destination was Australia in November 1966.
By March 1968 more than 3000 cars were being exported to many countries every month.
In April 1968 the Corolla was introduced to America.
Its selling price of US$1800 catapulted total US sales to 71,000 that year, 130,000 in 1969 and 208,000 in 1970.
Kazuo Morohoshi one of the industrial designers – he later became the head of the design department.

Corolla 2# 2nd generation
Mechanically very similar to the previous model, the body received a substantial facelift.
The coupe was added to the Corolla range (no longer just as the Sprinter).
Likewise, the Sprinter gained 2 and 4 door sedan versions.
The differences between the Corolla and the Sprinter were mostly cosmetic.
The Corolla and Sprinter both came in multiple grades (eg Standard, Deluxe, Hi-Deluxe, SL, SR).
The wagon was now made in both 2 door and 4 door models.
The 1400cc T and 1600cc 2T engines were added to the Corolla and Sprinter.
The bodies were the same as the 3K engined models but the mechanicals were upgraded with stronger parts.
The 2T-G engine was offered only on the Corolla Levin coupe and the Sprinter Trueno coupe.
This engine was not offered on any other Corolla or Sprinter for these years.
Effectively, the Levin was the GT grade for the Corolla and the Trueno was the GT grade for the Sprinter.
The Levin and Trueno also had minor trim differences.
The Levin was never sold as a Sprinter and the Trueno was never sold as a Corolla.
A minor face lift occured in September 1971.
The 2# Corolla and Sprinter were managed by Shiro Sasaki (who also managed the next model).
Ryuzo Hoshino was one of the industrial designers – he later worked on the Soarer.

Corolla 3#, 4#, 5# 3rd generation
The body received another substantial change but the mechanicals were similar to the previous models.
This time the Corolla and Sprinter were visually distinct from each other.
The Corolla had a squared off front end with a rounded grill.
The Sprinter had either a squared off front end with a square grill
or an aerodynamic front end with a horizontal grill.
The 3# and 5# were sold under the Corolla name.
The 4# and 6# were sold under the Sprinter name.
The Levin was only available as a Corolla and always had the 2T-G engine.
The Trueno was only available as a Sprinter and always had the 2T-G engine.
The 2T-G engine was only available on the Levin and Trueno.
The major difference between the Corolla and Sprinter was trim and a slightly different front end.
The 3#, 4#, 5# and 6# Corolla and Sprinter were managed by Shiro Sasaki (who also did the previous model).

Corolla 7# 4th generation
The 7# range has a completely new sharp edged look.
Several new features such as rack and pinion steering are added along with new engine choices (1800cc 3T, 1500cc 3A).
The Corolla and Sprinter names were carried over from the previous model.
The Levin name was now reserved for the coupe with 2T-G engine but the 2T-G engine was also available in the GT version of the sedan, hardtop and liftback.
Design work was started in 1974 by Fumio Agetsuma. The goals he told his team were:
- Quiet cars will have a definite edge. Conservation of both resources and fuel will be very important. Economy and value will also carry considerable weight.
- Our new Corolla must be as aerodynamically perfect as the parameters allow. It must be comfortable, with enough interior room to move about in. It will need all the modern features that future customers will want as well.
- Corolla must change. But we should never destroy the popular base upon which Corolla sales are built. Our new car must reflect the wishes of the consumer, the ordinary people who drive Corollas.
- There should be no generation gap with Corolla. It should appeal to young and old alike. Corolla must also transcend national boundaries. It muts perform as well in sub-zero temperatures as it does in the tropics or in the heat of the deserts of the world. Above all, Corolla must be a car that pleases.
Corolla has an illustrious tradition. Now, let us build our new Corolla on that tradition, the kind of new Corolla we know the drivers of the world will expect.

The TE72 liftback was known as the T-18 in Australia.
It was the only Toyota sold in Australia with the 3T engine.
The American TE72 coupe had TE72 in the model code but TE71 in the VIN.
The Sunrunner was a coupe modified into a convertible by Griffith (USA).
The Sunrunner was blessed by Toyota and sold through Toyota dealers with a full warrantee.
Griffith also made the Celica Sunchaser convertible.
Corolla 8# 5th generation
The Corolla changed to front wheel drive except for the AE85, AE86, wagons and vans.
An advantage of FWD is better use of space (no driveshaft or axle to intrude into the passenger space).
If an inexperienced the driver judges a corner wrongly then his natural reactions tend to be safer with FWD (turn the wheel more in the desired direction).
For RWD turning the wheel too far by an inexperienced driver may cause the car to spin but allows an experienced driver much greater control.
Even today the AE86 is a popular car because the 4A-GEU is easily replaced by the supercharged 4A-GZE (or converted to turbocharging) and the rear wheel drive allows better control in controlled drifts (spinning the wheels in corners so that the rear of the car goes sideways without losing control).
FWD cars can not be used for drifting because when the front wheels spin they also lose steering capability.
As well as remaining rear wheel drive, the Levins and Sprinters had different front styling and a longer rear end after the wheels.
Previously the Levin was only for the twincam models in the Corolla range and the Trueno was the twincam model in the Sprinter range.
Now the Levin name is used for fixed headlight RWD models, the Sprinter name is used for the popup headlight RWD models and the Trueno is the twincam version of the Sprinter.
However, the Sprinter name was also used in Australia for the fixed headlight RWD model (Australia didn’t have the popup headlight RWD models).
I am not interested in FWD, so I have listed only a couple of the FWD models to show the difference from the RWD models.
