Proxes T1-R are most bang for the buck, drove them under my 309GTI16 on the ring. Calavera did a 10mins with it. (Only 10 laps experience, we're still rookies ).

Too bad about the RE720's...I would have liked a set of those next. Turanza's have been around for a while..had them under the MX5 (stock tires) and they were absolutely horrible...cheap comfort tires, not dual duty at all.

PS: Your GTI16 should be capable of a 08:45s lap (or even quicker) on fresh T1R's Lots of miata people use the T1R's as dual duty track/daily driving tires. So it is possible...Guess a lot of it is dependent on driver agressivity. Basically, if you can keep them in one piece during a trackday you're either going to slow or a really good driver :-)

Laptiming is scary on the ring... Calavera has much more feeling for racing then me, this lap was his first time that he drove my GTI. And it was in heavy traffic and almost standard car. With crappy suspension etc.
8:45 is for the people who live there every weekend, know the car inside out and have done some serious money investments to the car.
Maybe in this context it's a bit useless to name the time, but i think its really nice for a car you don't know.

GTI16 is long gone btw, it's a nice engine but the rest of the car is crappy engineering.

Besides, what is you're fastest lap then?


Anyway, T1-R stays much bang for buck, maybe they don't live that long, but the price is also much lower comparing to other tires.

I would love to respond, but that would lead this thread way of topic. I completely forgot just how cheap T1R's really were. So my money would be on a set of those and while at it, buy a set for the rear too. Its just 90E more, but you'll have a car with grip limits that are even front to rear.


(10mins is about the time of our 110hp volvo 360, which is quite slow too)

If I can do 8:55/9:05 with a ae92 gti (shopping trolley after all) then you can do 8:45 with that 306gti

GY Eagle F1 are nice tyres.. maintains good grip on wet, significant more grip then the Potenza's and better feel when you're close to the limit.

Bot oh well.. always the same with tyre-topics Everyone has different opinions/experiences so hard to tell what's best for one person.

I kind of liked the Falken Ziex, but I didn't drove them hard much. Sold the tires to Robokill (when going from 15->14 inch) so perhaps he can tell more about them under other circumstances.

Well now... i think everybody only reads what they want to read.
It was said: yes, i was the driver, it was a completely stock 309gti, meaning lousy suspension. Oh one thing you both forgot, it was not my car, and the first time i ever drove in this car. Think about that.

Anyway back ontopic,

The Potenza;s were great tires, I had driven with them, and i liked it's behaviour in dry and wet.
I can also remember a trackday on Zandvoort where i drove just behind Mux all heat long... I believe he also had the RE720, and haven't seen him slide when he attacked every corner at high speed. And for the notice, i was sitting on his bumper that heat, and with an EP71 (72HP) That little white spot behind him


It's a shame the stopped manufacturing the RE720. I thought it was a great tire for it's price. But the T1-R is best bang for the buck. Handles quite good in wet and dry conditions, and heck you can get it in almost every size.

Bridgestone had the best tyres with S02 - S03- Re720 and stopped production!!!! Why .
From my rallying experience here in belgium ,I retain three tyres.
We use commercial tyres , competition ones are prohibited in my rally category.
I'm speaking about 195/50/15 dimensions:
What's most used here are BF Goodrich G Profiler :about 55€.

I also tried Michelin Pilot Exalto 2, very good too , but expensive (about 80€

And last I tried (last Sunday) was Maxxis MA Z1, very satisfying too.and 50€ only (a S02 lokks like profile)
I tried all these in front , as on rear axle , I found it much fun to have it slipping
