4AGE - Engine Smoke and Smell
Hi everyone,
This has been bothering me.... Since i've overhauled my 20V with a full gasket kit and the swap was made my engine is always smelly, and oil being burnt is somehow big.... I've driven for like 2 years, already made a dyno test... And.... I'm even more confused... Made 162,4 Engine HP With like 170nm Binary strenth..... Smoke occours pretty much just when i press the pedal after some time desacelerating.... And a new one i've spotted. Warm start....... When i crank it on warm mode a big puff of oil being burnt is noticed..... Cold start, not a single puff of oil.... Just a bit of smell........ What do i have on my engine? Bad retainers? Thanks! |

Most likely bad valve stem seals.

4AGE - Engine Smoke and Smell
Hi jondee86,
Thanks for the input. Usually when the problem is stem seals COLD start usually makes a big puff of oil. Mine when COLD nothing happens.... even the smell of oil is somehow pretty much nonexistent. Well.... guess i'll need to check stem seals.... |

but the smoke after decelerating is a very good pointer to stem seals

The smoke cloud when decelerating is seen in the rear view mirror when i press the pedal again to acelerate.
It is like the first spark and combustion..... Then all clears..... Man it is driving me nuts..... The dyno run made it even worse..... 162 HP on the engine clears the thesis of piston rings probably for everyone that i've talked to....... |

As to your description: Does it smoke more off throttle, or in throttle? I have a feeling you have a incorrectly installed oil control ring.... not sure, but that is my gut Dan - You can | .... I have the same problem when i press the pedal after some time desacelerating.
I will do a complete overhaul of the engine, even the buttom end. Don't wanne take the risk of doing the job twice and loose money on it. We also think its the stem seals. Also did a dyno and got 177hp and 183nm on the crank. So you can't know from that. grtz |

Decelerating in gear and then flooring the loud pedal and then smoke is a typical sign of valve stem seals. However, I'm not sure that modern synthetic oils are as easy to burn. When I ran synthetic 2-stroke oil in my dirtbike, I noticed that there was much less smoke and that a lot of liquid oil got blown out the end of the pipe. But getting a puff of smoke when starting a warm engine is still a good indication of leaking stem seals. Smoke when you hit the pedal at the bottom of a long (off the pedal and in gear) downhill says that there is oil accumulating in the combustion chamber, and that can be from leaking stem seals or worn rings. Decel fuel cut means there is no combustion on the downhill, so the oil collects until you light the fire by hitting the gas pedal. Only that milisecond..... Crazy stuff... hahaha I have new stem seals ready to fit in.... Is it possible to replace them from the top of the engine right? I just don't want to open my engine again.. haha |
