Valve clearance
Hi again, im still rebuilding engine. Today building head i realised the gap on the exhoust side between cam followers and cam is a lot less than optimal size.

Tech data says 0.30 to 0.40 gap but mine has hardy 0.15

Valve shims on toyota oe is almost 10€ each. Any idea of another place to buy it?

Long time ago a friend of mine grind its peugeot engine ones with sand paper but these was much smaller than toyota ones and i guess it will not seat propely on the follower.

Honda uses the same shims afaik.

Valve clearance
For the 16v, the 25mm shims are available from all these bikes.
The following bikes all use the same kind of shims:
Model:
Honda:
(79-83) CB750, CB750C, CB750F, CB750K, CB750SC dohc
CB900, CB900C, CB900F, CB1000C, CB1100F, CBX (all)

Triumph:
Hinckly triples and fours
Speed Triple, Tiger, Daytona, Trophy, Sprint

Yamaha:
SRX250, XT250
(86-00) TT350 XT350
(92-9Cool XJ600 Seca II
(83-93) XVZ12 XVZ13 Venture Royale Royal Star XVZ1200 XVZ12
(85-02) VMX1200 V-Max Vmax VMX12
(84-93) FJ1100, FJ1200
I would double check the clearance. You typically have larger gaps Vs a smaller gap. If the valves and seats where ground then the machine shop should have ground the end of the stem to match the material removed during the valve grinding process.
The other option is to remove the valve(s) and dress each valve stem to get the correct clearance. But if its more then a couple, you will be spending lots of hours recording clearances and verifying the valves over all length.

Just an inquiry... what cam are you using? I ask because that clearance (.30 to .40) seems a bit generous, while your actual readings seem a bit tight.

Typically... exhaust clearance is no less then .2mm, and no greater than .3mm

you can "grind" these as well. you will need a flat surface (small steel plate), and 2 pieces of abrasive paper one piece = to 600, and one piece = to 1000. Remember... you CAN'T add material back... so be careful, and use a quality caliper, or micrometer to measure before, and after

@Dan: Considering the amounts are so small, could he grind a bit off the valve to increase the gap? Obviously going to far on this approach is worse but might be easier than the shims?

I finally talk to a friend who owns a garage shop and lend me a shims box from wurth. It seems a common size on jap cars and bikes.

The recommended meassurement i get is from a official garage book

Inlet btwn 0.19 and 0.29
Eshoust btwn 0.29 and 0.39

I assume in the worst case, is better to have bigger gap than a allways contact follower, isnt it?

Nit sure what manual you got but according to the official MR2 AW manual (came as 4AGZE as well) they list the same clearance as for the 4AGE. Intake 0.15-0.25mm Exhaust as Dan said 0.2-0.3mm

yes... but it would require dismantling the valve from the head to do it...
