86er's Track rebuild N2.??? Finally an update page 8
Ok so rewind
Ok so its been a while but still here, not sure where to start some 2+years ago this car got parked and parted out after i had a weird fuel/ignition problem (was acting like it was running on 3cyls and would cut out after a while) which led to a second engine knock ( this was after driving car fine for 7+ months since the first knock becuz of sump pan) So that pushed me to halt project and I sold most of the nice bits and kept the shell. Anyway enough of that so It was parked for a while some couple months just catching dust & rust when I decided that i was going racing. I always loved track cars, mostly for the builds and the engineering that would go into making a perfect weapon, and I always wanted to take a stab at making a perfect weapon, it wouldnt need to be too fast but i would need enough grunt and reliability was important, but handling and braking was key. So I painted i rough picture in my head, wasnt sure of everything, but I knew it could be done. So I started rough planning and talks, I knew I wanted it to be as light as I could afford, so I started with a chromolly cage. At this stage I had to contemplate what to do about a serious rust problem that had manifested itself with my roof from the previous removal of sunroof. I cut it out After the cage was done the project got parted again, for another year and some sadly, I guess I had gotten caught up with other stuff, but at the beginning of the year I made a push to get it back on track and on its way to completion. There are a lot of ideas in this car and its not 100% where i want it its still a phase one build even at this satge, but here goes. As far as power plant I considered alot of options in the last few months before the build restarted, mostly focused on reliable power (200-230hp), so looked at alot of stock 1800-2000cc 4cly, the altezza engine was a great match to car so it was high on list but it is heavier than say a sr20ve, k20a, f20c or some of other 2lts. I heavily considered the Ford Duratec 2.0 as i think its a gem of a engine, small, light weight 2lt capable of an easy 200bhp with little work and 300 with a lot. The thing that stopped me going that route was having to shop in pounds and euros, at the moment it was a bit too much of a deterrent. Anyway my choice was decided when I got an opportunity to get another beams swap complete, so I jumped at it. Now the shell had gotten a bit rustier even though I tried to weather proof it in this time as best i could so was more work to be done. Now the first thing I had planned to do with the motor of choice was optimize balance and weight distribution, so this meant ultimately in the current configuration, a front mid mount, this was one of the more challenging bits of the build, so we tackled it first It was a tight fit, alot of cutting, massaging, then came mounts Will post more in morning, it continues to be long days/weeks/months "life begins at 8000rpms" - Going Racing |

86er's Track rebuild N2.??? Finally an update page 8
lol Thanks to Kaiju been meaning to come and update been so tired and busy just trying to get the car running
So onward and forward, you are going to be seein this guy a lot he is the master fabricator that builds it all Once we got her in we felt good but still tons to do floating on stock sus, at one point in time I was going to use the trueno front end which i had acquired minus a bumper, but I was influenced to stick with the levin front, the current aero package would be based on a CBY, with a little help from skyrider I was able to get a copy of his cby flares and he loaned me some wheels to fit up the front coilovers. We used ohlins from a DC5 with 86 spindles at bottom, once we worked out strut heights we pulled down the front shocks and did needed modifications to the cases the steering works off top of strut in the dc5 and we kept that as the new engine location required relocating steering car on ground well the front at relative height, still only had 2 wheels and rear coils were on as yet Now the best part of the CBY kit for me was the front bumper, it always seemed to be one of the most functional bumpers for the 86 to me, one large opening for coolers to convenient ducts for cooling brakes and a nice front lip reminiscent of the trd n2 lip, also it keeps the lines of car, a nice starting point. So i had it made locally \ back on 13s for now, bumper on its way its hard to move around in here wow its low on 13s, but alot of work still top be done on rear suspension intake acquired, 20v bt itbs with proper 50mm stacks an idea of seating position with help from kaiju. The shiter now ends up back where handbrake normally is so this meaint moving back, I didnt mind it was all part of the plan, to help centralize weight distribution. Im kinda fleshing out details as we go along, no outright mod list at the beginning of this thread update. The completed bumper This front duct is a key part of aero/air flow package, more on that later onto gearbox mounts an an early look at a new crossmember "life begins at 8000rpms" - Going Racing |

So anyway gearbox in final position, these bushings would be changed to poly bushings for motor and box. More cutting for exhaust and the loaner seat in general location (alot of this build was based on borrowing in early stages while i orderd/waited for parts :o )
Onto the rear end We are using a 6link rear end design. So 4 equal length arms and a watts link. The diff is a nissan Vanette with a 4.8 here are first stages, also arms are chromolly We realized that rear was too high at this point so we said we would have to lower the shock position on rear diff later, that will come down the road. Another 86 builder from a famous shop in St. George lent me some wheels with 3b rubber so I could see what stance and so was like I was excited Co-owner/builder looking over work slapped on my old bonnet 8o an idea of high rear this is with coilovers almost right down, this had to be rectified a loaner spoiler from a honda lol Parts started arriving and I got the front brakes minus hats, Alcon monoblock calipers with some huge wilwood 2 piece rotors (11.75x1.25) also some cusco bottom arms i acquired from japan completely replaces tension rod brackets with some nice pieces was time to remove the old roof skin new roof = lower CG "life begins at 8000rpms" - Going Racing |

now you can get an idea of of front cooling design and what all that dead space is for
some old tank  i secured one complete tilton brake pedal with cylinders, now i just need 2 more pedals lol No tires yet so, also the firt spoiler which I ended up selling, 3a spoiler rules suck So Mike took a piece of corner section then he took this sheet cutting up an old sump Someone lent me some old rubber, yes I am a bum lol this man wont stop gettin in front my pics Progress with the new oil system Oh shit bonnet is here more fitting up porn Evo 4 rear brakes mounted Oil tank mounted Swirl pot arrived and some lines Slacking off this goes here Time to lower rear shocks Final steering design Fitted radiator mounted Oil cooler is here Bought some rubber more stuff came "life begins at 8000rpms" - Going Racing |
