AE86 16v standalone - any suggestions?
hola there!

Do You have any experience with standalone (freedom) ecu for 86'er?
I guess that there aren't many options.
AEM EMS?
Megasquirt?
3SGE PowerFC ? Maybe someone have made it work with 4AGE....

I need it for early MAP sensored harness - N/A ca.200hp I know that I could run some piggyback but I'm worring that there will be fuel problems with ITB.

Do You know what ECU is running in UEO's rolla?

IF Carlsberg made an AE86, then it would be propably the best car in the world...

megasquirt would do the trick. the 4age NA is a pretty simple engine. Just be sure to have a wideband lambda for adjusting it to the right specs.

I would say:

-fuel pressure regulator
-wideband lambda
-megasquirt


You'll be adjusting at least a couple days when the engine runs ok. Fine tuning is the key!

Anything will work for 200hp.

If you want 200hp AND you want to have excellent driveability through the revrange -> Motec,etc etc. Including a day or two to do the first rough tuning on a bench.

A 200hp 1.6 4A-GE will have a very peaky VE-characteristic, with lots of small peaks. To get the ignition map anywhere near optimal you'll need lots of datapoints.
Fuel is of slightly less importance, as long as it doesn't lean out to much under accel.

Robo, do You have megasquirt? Is it easy to tune?


nohachi - You're all right.. - But motec cost a little too much for me. It's over EUR 2000,00. I hope that there are some cheaper options.

IF Carlsberg made an AE86, then it would be propably the best car in the world...

MS is cheap option, but I have question about the efficiency. I've experienced MS in some cars w/o big mods, but I always had the feeling that the stock ECU is much better than the MS as torque/response.
Can MS be finetuned better that the stock ECU or it has limited efficiency?

MS cannot be finetuned better then the stock ECU. The stock ECU just has a lot more mappoints to work with. Running MS for fuel only as it was originally intended will most likely be fine though. Using it to run ignition is a compromise on a peaky high rpm engine. You are using 8 or 12 points to cover 9000rpm..doesn't leave a whole lot to work with..

The number of map points that an ECU has is not an indication of an ECUs quality.
Most of the resolution that you need in a map is where the engine is least efficient, and so needs fine tuning as you can be +/- too much fuel very easily, so you set up a number of the cells with small RPM steps from idle to say 3000rpm. After that point you'll find that the engine's requirements are pretty linear so 1000rpm steps are pretty much okay after that, possibly even greater spacing.

The reason that a lot of early ECUs used lots of map points was because of the processing requirements to do the required interpolation, a decent ECU will not just calculate the fuel & advance with the points around the cell its using (1x1) grid, but will factor in the areas two or more cells away (2x2 or 3x3)

Are you sure Gon? I think I read that MS does simple linear interpolation. No nonlinear stuff. Might me wrong though.
