AE86 Models and types ( zenki / kouki )

Ok here is some info for all the new peepz with the term

"AE86" "hachi roku""

The AE86 is a

Toyota Corolla model build from late 1983 to mid 1987 it has difrent names in difrent parts of the world

from its origin Japan its called.

Corolla Levin and Sprinter Treuno

Levin and trueno are thunder and lightning (if i am not mistaking)

The names are till common in japan.

The rest of the world will mostly see the car markt as "toyota corolla".

The Corolla Sprinter know as the "TE71" is the predicessor of the AE86 they have similiar contruction as most parts from driveline engine etc fit both cars like its own.

The TE71 and AE86 are both RWD and are also the last corolla rwd line.
(excluding MR2, Supra, Celica)

Now we keep seeing 2 letters and 2 numbers WTF is it,

AE stand for its type in this case Corolla (also seen on newer models)
86 is the digit number which keeps him unique to its brothers (newer FWD corolla's)

AE86 is just the number and type of the car and nothing more, it tells you you drive a toyota corolla rwd build from 1983-1987.

Now the term "hachi roku" is easier to explain check up with JAP dictionary and you'll see it just means = 86
hachi = 8 roku = 6

There are 3 difrent names for the car

Levin
Trueno
Corolla GT

There are 4 difrent models

2 Coupe's
2 Hatchbacks

Now here comes the info. The trueno has retracable headlights and the levin has normal ones. Although the trueno is widely sold in the US its still called a Corolla.

so we have a

coupe levin/corolla gt with normal lights
hatchback levin/corolla see above

coupe trueno/corolla gt with retracable headlights
hatchback trueno/corolla gt see above

This is basic info to show what the term and type

That isnt 100% right - How about the AE86 with a 4AC engine, SR5?

Well you could agrue that those cars are not AE86's. Although I do think the SR5 does come with an AE86 vin number. In japan though the tuned down version has an AE85 vin if I have understood correctly.

But indeed, for completeness the 4 different models came out in GT trim with the 4AG + LSD and in SR5 trip with 4AC and normal diff.

In that way you could also argue though that you have to mention the pre facelift and post facelift models (kouki and zenki, or is that zenki and kouki).

Im not perfectly sure about the AE85, but the SR5 is an AE86 to my knowledge...

Not all GTs, here in Denmark anyway, got LSD, but allmost

@ Jan....I havent heard of any danish GT´s without LSD. Mine is a november ´83 model, and it sure has got it. Or isn´t it related to the year of the model?

I havent seen one either, but the guy I bought mine from used to have one without a LSD

Has nothing to do with years. In some countries LSD was optional (like in Russia) and then there was the SR5 which was the budget model sold in a few countries. It had a 12 valve engine and no LSD if I am not mistaken. But since we dont have SR5s here, I know little about them

There are also different types of AE86 during the years, Zenki (early in japanese?), 83-85 and Kouki (Late in japanese?), 85-87.

There are some differenses on the modells, like LSD, drive shafts, bodywork and cannot be exchanged between modells without modification.

I forgot the name GTS.

The SR5 is in my eyes an AE85

Going with it though

i have seen GT models with an drumbrake rear axle with a 4A-GE.

So yes if you check them

Kouki Levin

sr5
gt with lsd
gt without

zenki Levin

sr5
gt with lsd
gt without lsd

etc for the trueno

making it more models

but if you look at it the way i ment it its

2 types of coupe's with to new models

making 4 types of coupe

and 4 types of hatchbacks
