AE86 ignition problem.
Hi guys, i 've got a problem which i need your advice.

When i first had my 86, it was idling at 1500 revs. One of my mates then adjusted this to 1000 revs. After this was adjusted, whilst driving, the car cut out and the ignition light on the dashboard was on. I restarted and there was no problem. This was a few months ago.

Yesterday, while i was driving in a traffic jam, the car cut out on me 3 times. Everytime i just restarted.

So what do you guys think the problems is? Is this in anyway related to increasing the idling? Do i need to adjust the idling?

Any help will be apprciated.

Can you provide some more information ? Such as :

1. Was the car idling normally/evenly before cutting out ?

2. Did it die slowly, or just stop like the key was turned off ?

3. Did it start up straight off or did you have to crank for a while ?

4. Has the car been showing any other "odd" behavior ?

5. AFM or MAP engine ?

6. Was it overheating ?

There is no direct connection between idle speed and the engine
cutting out. If the idle speed is too low (less than 500 rpm) then it
will be prone to stalling if a load is applied. But that is not the same
as the engine cutting out.

1) Normal Idling

2) Slowly

3) Start up straight

4) no odd behaviour

5) Map

6) No over heating

I drove the car back to my home for 15miles and it was perfect. I am just curious as to why it happened and don't want it happening again.

how about a compression check... sometimes these show some secrets the engine is hiding.

When the engine dies slowly, it is most likely to be a fuel problem. And
since you say it happened while you were in a traffic jam (and you are
in summer), I would guess maybe some sort of vapour lock due to high
underhood temperatures ?

Maybe you got some leftover "winter" fuel when you filled up last time ?

Anyway, unless it starts cutting out on a regular basis, I wouldn't be too
concerned. Old cars do some strange things Smile
