Aussie ae86 rally car
greetings from Australia Thumbs up!

a little background, i have have owned 3 ae86 (3 doors) in my few years of sprinter loving...all under the premises of them being race/drift cars...the 1st two were a little too rusty for my best interests, so they were striped to the last nut and bolt and almost given away..i bought this particular shell about 18 months ago, and since ive never made a race/rally car before, and don't earn enough to pay someone to prepare it for me, i have done most of the things on my own Smile

i really should have kept a tab on how many cutting discs, linishing belts, wire wheels, sanding discs have been used on this car.. it was originally doing to be a drift car, until i started servicing at rallies for work, and driving a few autocross's and motorkhanas in borrowed cars...i was hooked, the dirt is just too much fun!

as there really arent alot of rallied ae86's in Australia, im hopeing a few people on this board who rally them can see this and tell me your impressions (seems to be a fair few in finland and stuff)

anyway.

When i started.

to get the buckets nice and low i had to cut out the floor on both sides and remove that hump that usually sits there then weld in rails.

My DMS struts, which are yet to be mated to a stub axle...that will come.

Basically it wont be very radical.

i have everything to bolt back in,
from the top of my head
Zenki disc rear end (kaaz diff, 4.8:1 ratio)
bigport 16v (at first, to get used to the car, have a black top 20v bottom end that im building up with quad throttles etc)
Autronic Smc ecu
rx7 series IV front brakes
trd bushes thoughout, usual things
Bilstien rear shocks

thats all i remember now, obviously all the other rally car normals like seats, harnesses trip metre and stuff Smile

here are some old pics of my old shells (white one was crushed)

Awesome project! Cool

So why did you choose the AE86 over an Impreza, you don't like the Scoobies?

this is a better car to learn in i think...I initnally thought parts were cheaper for this car, oh how wrong i was Banging head ,but its slower, more forgiving, plus i really like the shape of AE86's Thumbs up!

and well yeah i am sick of subarus abit! I'll never own one, i like my less common cars more, be them quick or not! (current daily driver a ford 3 door Tx3 laser/escort, i've seen maybe 2 others in this city)

Looks great! Thumbs up!

The rollcage looks quite comprehensive so if I should come up with a suggestion I'd say you should have a reinforcement across connected to the floor like this.. or straight/flat.

and you might consider using metal-joints instead of trd bushes, atleast some places like panhard rod and then also make it adjustable.

keep up the good work Wave

rose jointed suspension arms will be on the way, (one day) im just putting it all baack together so i can get to drive it again.

And yes, i was very very tempted to atleast put a bar in the main hoop( for side impact protection)

well i really don't have an answer for that, i know i should put one in..but i ran out of tubing at the last minute, can't get any till next year (out of stock) and well, its taking up too much room to be waiting around any longer...

thankyou for you comment though

and your welds are so much neater than mine!

I know what you mean, Scoobies are to common here also, that is why I try to differenciate with the 2 door wide body set up.

But I also think that working with them contributed to your disliking, I would never want to make a living from my hobby, it's overkill.

I like the speed and handling though, the Hachi won't match up in the end, but it's alot of fun also.

I'm putting uniballs in the Impreza suspension, are they the same as rose joints?

yeah i used to love subaru's, but now...just a car i see as boring!

i dont know what rosejoints are called (rod ends, pillowballs) but they look like this..

its too bad the rules im not allowed to change the mounting points of the suspension...no equal length trailing arms for me!

small update, sudden death of a family member means there wont be updates for a while
Sad

Scoobies boring?!?! Confused
Come around when I finished my car, I'll teach you boring. Tongue

Those look like the joints which I'm going to use, pillowballs sound familiar. Wink

Can you tell me some more about the trailing arms??
I'm not bound to any rules. Cool
