Insert massive timelapse here! Big Grin

So I didn't go through with the AA63 swap due to time constraints from my side and I decided to import an AE86 from Japan. AA63 got sold to The Doctor who used to for his KE20.

Since the Carina was now exposed to the weather, it is deteriorating a bit faster than I hoped for... One of the brake calipers is intermittent (had a breakdown last year), leaking tail light seals and an rusting front fenders.

Luckily I found a set of NOS tail lights for sale a few weeks ago including the rubber seals in 100% good condition!
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Banpei's new TA60 family cruiser]
When I installed them it turned out that Toyota sold these with light bulbs preinstalled. Surprisingly all 10 the bulbs were still in working condition! Huh

Old vs new:

As you can see I already tried to stop the leaking with silicone kit some time ago.

De-JDMizing:

And this is how it's supposed to look in less-JDM form:

Rust is really a serious issue now. The front left fender is rusted through to a point where the moulding at the bottom can't hold on any longer, so I had to take it off.

So left vs right side now looks like this:

I don't think reattach the mouldings after the fenders have been swapped. IMO it looks much better without. Wink

Strangely enough the attachments have disappeared from this thread! Huh

Today the Carina went from this:
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Banpei's new TA60 family cruiser]
to this:
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Banpei's new TA60 family cruiser]

Yes I've detuned it to the stock seats! Hurray!
Even though the seats are very comfortable I decided to go back to stock as the seating is too low for the Carina and the rear seats don't match the front. (black vs brown hue) Also the Celica Supra rear seats don't fit the Carina without a major overhaul so I will never be able to make the front and rear match.

That also means I'll be considering selling the entire set:

If you're interested, drop me a PM and I can provide more photos.

Weird I think the lower seating position with a similar seat (AA63 seat wich i bought from you years ago Tongue ) suited my KE70 a lot better compared to the very high stock seats Huh

Are the Celica Supra rear seats a lot different in size? perhaps you could swap over the cover?
Do think the Celica Supra seats match the door cards better then the stock seats.

They are exactly the same as the AE86 seats so I think the Carina just was made to sit more upright and the doors/dash are. a tad higher than the KE70.

Today I attacked two pain points on the Carina:
1. moldy fuel lines
2. Rear seatbelt half melted

This is what I found near the end of last years under the bonnet:
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Banpei's new TA60 family cruiser]
Today I finally had some time to do stuff with the Carina, so I bought some new fuel lines and replaced all of them. Stupid me forgot his phone so no pictures of them replaced. Just trust me, it looks a whole lot better. Big Grin

Another eyesore was that someone welding up the Carina torched one of the rear seat belts to death. The belt was fixed, but the buckle was still half molten. Every time I would get the car pass MOT I would get an advisory to replace the seat belt. Bozu sold his old rear seat belts for the 3 door AE86 and I replaced the molten one. Thumbs up!

Today I spent some more time getting the Carina roadworthy again. Every time I visit the garage and have to fetch something I move the Carina 10 meters forward and then 9.5 meters back once I'm done. Lately it was getting a lot harder to push the final half meter into the garage, so I finally made the front left caliper free again.

The weather was dreadful (pouring down) and the garage was quite dark. This was very difficult as my trusty light bar didn't have a charge and I had to use my phone to shine a light on the caliper. It took me an hour to realize the rubber seal is mounted the other way around as on the instructables video. Banging head

While I was at it I found my front bushings are in need of replacement as well:
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Banpei's new TA60 family cruiser][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Banpei's new TA60 family cruiser]
And also the bushings of the steering rack:
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Banpei's new TA60 family cruiser]
I looked at the polybush set I have, but at least two of them are different than the ones on the AE86. So I decided against harvesting the polybush set and I'll try to order some genuine replacements. Wink

I also found my left front door has a rust hole on the inside, so that's another setback. I think the door is still salvageable, but once I have replaced the seal on the right side caliper I'll drive the car to a bodyshop to get a quote for fixing this rust and a respray.
