Best Induction Kit / Set up
Looking to get an induction kit for my 86. The car currently has the original air box fitted but I want to hear that nice induction note that the 4age makes.

What are the best kits out there at the moment??, was looking at a mushroom head air filter but I've been told their not great for heat soakage.

What a coincidence, I read the title and thought - that's only good for the noise but as that is what you're after fair enough Big Grin
If noise is your goal get a mushroom and a short pipe to connect it. You can then fab up a heat shield to separate it from the rest of the engine bay.

Obviously not out of cardboard in the end

Hard to go past the Apexi kit...

Locates the filter behind the right headlight and although intake temps can go up
a bit in city traffic once you are on the open road the under hood temp drops to just
a few degrees above ambient. A cold air box certainly helps around town so if that
is where you do most of your driving you should try and make one.

Is there an overview where different types of air filters or even kits are compared for performance?

Because as far as I know, and I agree with you,in general, an open airfilter like described doesn't add anything besides a good noise..

A cotton type cone filter should give you a increase in HP, Less restrictive. Look for a filter that has the largest inside radius leading into the inlet tub. A cold air box is a good addition. You pick up about a 1% improvement in HP for every 10 degree drop intake temp. You should actually see more HP improvement from the lower temp Vs the filter.

Aftermarket induction kits are typically fitted for power gains and yes a goal would be to increase power even it is minor.

I'm liking that Apexi kit set up if I'm honest, minus the carboardFacepalm, nice and tidy.

If you want a pre-made kit, Apexi for sure. Otherwise I would say K&N

This only applies if the intake is the bottleneck, which on a stock engine it isn't.

A year or two back I was interested in intake restriction and made some
measurements of the pressure difference between atmospheric and the
intake ducting immediately after the throttle body and manifold at WOT.

The first pic is the full OEM JDM intake with snorkel..

The second pic is an Apexi filter with 3" dia alloy intake tube...

In this comparison which was on a 1600 supercharged engine flowing a fair
bit more than N/A engine, the pressure difference for the factory system
was 5.91 kPa @ 7480rpm and with the Apexi it was 1.43 kPa @ 7490rpm.

So a win for the Apexi, but if you were to factor in the higher airflow and
a new filter in the OEM system, the difference would between the two
systems would probably be in the order or 2.5 kPa (0.36 psi). Not a lot
but a small performance gain none the less Smile

You would be hard pressed to find a paper filter [aftermarket or stock] element that will flow even close to a cotton element. Search David Vizard air filter flow test. The very best paper element flowed 5.2 CFM/Sq inch,[motorcraft] The Cotton element flowed 6.5CFM/Sq inch. [K&N] The worst paper element only flowed 3.2 CFM/Sq inch. [Fram] Plus every bend in the stock intake track adds flow resistance.
