Built like an A-10 (Thunderbolt II aka Warthog)
So, I've finally gotten around to sharing my build thread. It's gonna take a bit as I have a couple years worth of updates. Figured this would tide a few people over who were dissapointed there would be no more 4age write ups ....
Andrew This first post covers the first AE86 I had. Until it's time came to an end. June '04 - Started off by picking up an 84 SR-5 (w/sunroof). No pics of it as bought. Immediately got some supra wheels (which I STILL have) and then some TRD 6k/5.5k (F/R) springs and KYB AGX shocks (which suck!). Drove it for a while, then to motivate the swap stopped changing the oil until it rod-knocked to a stand still. March '05 - Did my first GT-S swap, it had an RSR Ex-Mag GTII overdiff catback (And I STILL have the muffler) and a Koyo radiator. Also got a Cusco RS 2-way LSD. Aug-Sept '05 - Bought a B-tune drop vent hood, a whole bunch of Ueo style braces and a Fujitsubo Legalis-R single tip. Since the RSR was too loud for partial daily driver duty. Oct '05 - Odyysey battery (lasted until this year), and removed the P/S lines and looped the P/S rack. (P/S pump was never installed). Nov '05 - TRD 4-2-1 header, Illegal Garage 1-piece lightweight driveshaft, BV 4-link, Aerodyne dist heat shield & rear hatch bar (only good to quiet down sunroof/interior rattles). Dec '05 & Jan '06 - Cusco Engine/Trans mounts, Rebuilt my first T-50 trans (refer to writeup), got a TRD short shifter and whiteline adjustable swaybars. Feb '06 - Lexan rear window, T3 camber plates, tension rods & RCA. Also installed Energy suspension front control arm bushings and Moog ball joints. Mar '06 - Quaife QSR & manual rack swap. New 4.3 R&P. Apr '06 - Oil catch can, Fidanza Adj. Cam Gears and had to switch to NCRCA's. Because with the additional angle of the manual rack the brake calipers would go far enough to push against the sway bar... which was causing the pistons to get pushed in enough that I had to pump the brakes after drifting for them to work  !!! May '06 - Got some Recaro SRD's, and brackets w/recaro sliders from Wedge Engineering. Made my own HID conversion. July-Aug '06 - CF hatch, shorty antenna, and IS300/Celica GT-S pedals. Sept '06 - Traction Brackets (every lowered AE86 should have these!!!). Nov '06 - Red LED's in the cluster, and got an AMT tuning tri-bar. Also, I had sold the TRD 4-2-1 previously and gone back to stock manifold. Decided to get one of the KBD headers during the last group buy. Here's how she looked at the end... |

great build!
I always had/have in mind to put those red honda recaro seats in my car, but never sure about the clearance. I'm 2 meters tall.. can you tell me if you have more of less space above your head than stock? 5/2018 BMW F22 Coupe 1/1985 Toyota AE86 Levin Coupe |

OB - The car got destroyed in an accident.
D86, Jan - Thanks DJ - I don't remember now, I think it's about the same as stock or maybe a little lower. My friend is 6' 8" and has driven the car with no problems, of course he leans the seat back some. I could measure from the seat cushion at the base/seat back to the headliner if that'll help you. Moving on... to the second car.
Jan '07 - located a shell in a friends backyard... that was destined for the junkyard. Stripped down the old car, and the new one. Filled up the 3rd car spot pretty well with parts/motors/etc. Feb '07 - removed sound deadening (not doing this EVER again), cleaned the engine bay/interior. And then sprayed it with epoxy primer. Also undercoated the front fender wells. Mar '07 - Did my second GT-S swap, and got it started on stands. Found that when I was T-boned not only was my car almost torn in 2... it bent an axle, axle housing and broke a supra wheel. Also, put on my coilovers I picked up in Dec '07, before I even got the new shell. And new (to me) seats as the passenger side SRD got bent to hell when I got hit. Apr '07 - Got another axle, housing & installed them. Got her on the ground, except for a new windshield. I did take a drive to the gas station without the windshield, NEVER again. |

Thanks!
And your welcome. May '07 - Spool from a legends car supplier on ebay (BTW legends cars only use ZENKI axles) and a new 4.10 R&P from 600racing.com made by Motive gear. Jun '07 - Came up with a better rear brace vs my old Ueo style one that got damaged. Jul '07 - First prototype of the fender braces. Nov '07 - Made my own heim joint sway bar links, which made my already stiffer bars even more awesome. Mar to May '08 - Broke a pinion tooth on the 4.10's which lodged in between the gears and bent the spool. After 7 of them, I got tired of blowing T-series (6.7") Ring and Pinions so I researched, found and swapped in a MA4x Celica-Supra F-series (7.5") differential. Also sometime previously I got rid of my old traction brackets and switched to BattleVersion. May - Dec '08 - The weekend after getting the diff swap done, the motor I had been beating on for 3 years siezed. Lost interest in fixing it for a bit so it sat for about 6 months before I got another motor from the junkyard. Unfortunately while this used motor ran and drove awesome initially, it ended up rod knocking the same weekend after I got it running. Started it Thursday, dead Saturday night. Found a piece of the camshaft lobe had come free and ended up making it far enough to damage the #2 rod bearing. I was able to baby it home, and then yanked it back out. Feb '09 - Rebuilt the motor, had a bit of a rush as I started rebuilding it after work the week of an event I wanted to make. Started on Tuesday night after picking everything up from the machine shop, finished building and installing the motor as well as the initial break-in 11:30pm Friday night. Only to turn around get up at 4:30am, after falling asleep at 1:30am to load up and drive it to the track. Here's some video taken from that day. I'm at 1:36 for a brief second: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcpGWEQcBG4 On car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdTrNVXFE8A May to Jul '09 - Blew my 3rd T-50 trans, so I decided it was time to upgrade this as well. Made my own W58 adapter plate set... and like the motor rebuild there was a trackday the following weekend. So I made the trek down to so-cal to willow springs for all star bash to give the W58 a thrashing. http://speedhunters.com/archiv....aspx Quote: http://motormavens.com/2009/08...-pt-4/ Quote: Nov '09 - Event http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiMbULP1P7Q Dec '09 - Got a good deal on some Colt camshafts 261/268 (intake/exhaust) with 8.33mm lift. And also a shine auto front bumper, and made a custom bash bar/bumper support. Jan '10 - Event. Fast forward to 5:25 for 95mph entry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kubkk7LhdTk Feb '10 - Front bumper lights, thanks to Dan/Oldeskewltoy! And made some custom tow hooks. May '10 - Sold & shipped the 4age... |
