Anyone farmiliar with hks camshaft types for 4age?
I have a set of cams that came in a japanese import ae86 with largeport head. They are both marked with the hks stamp in the centre of the camshafts and only one, the exhaust camshaft, is marked at the end and that reads 256 8.1. the inlet camshaft is scribed in the centre as 264 A with no indication of lift. Going from the only cam card for hks cams for the 4age i could find online the 256 cams only come in 8.0 and the 264 cams come in 8.1. Do i have acombination of old and new hks cams and am i reading off of the wrong cam card for the 256 exhaust cam. Does anyone run this combination of cams on a 4age and what are peoples opinions on running 2 different camshafts like this?

I have a big port with the same HKS cams. But I believe that the stated lift is actually 8.3mm on both cams. The 8.1 is the valve max opening after the lash clearance is taken into considation. I'm not running with TVIS system on engine and I have a very good exhaust system. With that in mind, the intake cam is set 3 1/2 degrees advance and the exhaust camshaft is 1 degree advance which helped improve the lower end rpm torque.
I would not be concerned about the difference in lift. You are not going to see any real difference between 1 or 2 tenths of a mm in cam lift. Do not try to degree in the cams at max lift. Set up the cams by reading a equal lift on both sides of opening and close ramps. Dave W |

I have checked the cam timing off of max lift for both and im getting 114degrees for my 264 inlet and 112for 256 exhaust cam, this is without touching any of the cam timing, they were set up like this but had previously been removed from the engine, the engine is now running silver top rods with wiseco pistons 1mm oversived and silver top throttle bodies with 4-2-1 exhaust. What bottom end are have you in your car? im not sure if the piston and can combination i have will be any good to be honest |

I'm also running a short primary 4-2-1 exhaust, but stock piston and bottom end, W/ a 10.1 CR. The head is fully ported with a ported TB and intake manifold which also has been shorten 50mm.
My intake LCA is 106* and the exhaust is 109.5* On my motor moving the exhaust LCA, +/- 3* and 6* did not have a noticable improvement in the power curve, while adjusting the intake did. The only way to find the best LCA's is by testing. Dave W |
