yes you can change the oil. You have to check whether u have an LSD diff or not(you need that info, buying diff oil).

lift your rear up and turn the wheels, if both wheels turn in the same direction you have an lsd....

there's a tap under the diff. Warm up the diff oil by driving, this helps to drain the oil. you fil the diff through the level check plug.

Changing the oil rarely ever cures ring and pinion whine.. but it's worth a try.
Too much burnout's and clunky drifting will do that to an old ae86 diff..

Sorry to use this topic, but i have some similar problem. My ring and pinion arent perform correctly. Theres some backlash when driving in low rpm´s and changing gears, when on full gas, seems good. I was wondering if a new spacer "virtually" fix my problem. I mean virtually, assuming that ring and pinion are in reasonable shape.

You might be better off re-checking the adjustment of the ring and pinion before you get yourself a new spacer.. installing a new spacer means disassembling a lot of the pinion assembly. If it's not aligned correctly, then a new spacer wont help either.

Yes I suggest to re-check the ring and pinon backlash.
Check the pinion preload and you will know if you need to change spacers(in 90%+ of case no!)
After check carefully the contact path and you should be good.

Also for lsd diff I highly suggest Silkolene BoA90 ls oil.
I have compare it with many hypoid oil and this one is the winner in every spec.
