Gearbox jumps out of second gear
I can buy a cheap gearbox (T50) for my Carina, however it does have a slight little problem: the gearbox jumps out of second gear.
Now, how difficult is it to fix this? Dumb question

Skill level & tool availability & work space??????
Replace 2nd gear, 1st-2nd syncro hub, and probably its fork. You may be able to get by with just grinding/cutting all the dogs/teeth on the old parts.
1st, make sure the shifter is moving all the way without interference, the same distance as 4th.
Not a FWD with cables to adjust is it?

Banpei, who are you going to buy it from? Mel?

Thanks allencr! Thumbs up!
So it is more than "just" readjust/replace the selector.

Can it be easily held in gear or does it try & pull you out of your seat?
2nd gets a little different wear then the others cause it's always for accelerating, it gets slammed because its a straight pull, it's easier to pull then push when accelerating, and people are almost always pulling on it a bit, before & after the shift, even though they'll say they aren't. The extra wear is on its dogs/teeth and on the fork. That's for long term gradual wear and then it still really takes a lot of abuse besides normal wear & tear to do this to any trans.
If this has just happened suddenly, it's something else, usually lever related, a plastic bushing on the selector's bottom has come apart or some stray bit is limiting its travel.

LOL! Big Grin
So you were the one who nicked away the good box then. Angry
Guess I'll have to make my mind up whether I want to rebuild it myself or will continue to look for another box...

Gearbox jumps out of second gear
well i bought the box from a guy in Zutphen but after installing it i found out it was jumping out of 2nd. So i contacted the seller, he contacted Mel because he bought it from Mel and hadnot been using it.
Mel contacted me and told me i could swap it for another one.

The one that is jumping out of gear is from a Celcia, the one i picked up is from a Carina.
I had to hack my centreconsole to make it fit and the releasevork is different.
So i am happy i have a Carina box now, i hope i can glue back my centre console. There is a diffenrence in gearstick location, the Carina one has the shifter at the back, the Celica one has the shifter 15cm from the back.

I dont know if your skillz can handle fixing gearboxes, i havent tried it myself so i dont know if it is hard or not. Having it done can cost you a lot of money i guess..

@ allencr: it is happening oonly when shifting down to 2nd gear, but if you release the clutch quickly again when it is rattling you can put it into 2nd, and just hold the gearstick and its fine. it doesnt tries to pull you out of the seat.

but it is whining and rattling a little in all gears.

That's even a more important reason to not do it: I'm not going to hacksaw it into my Carina and Mel told me the box would be the right one.
Sure it is from a Carina TA40! Big Grin
