Before I go to expense and grief of fitting a Ford type 9 box has anyone any ideas on what may be happening to BOTH 86 gearboxes I have tried.
The story goes like this: bought car, won't change from 5th to 4th at anything over 10mph. Fitted a different 'box and new gearlever bush and this one won't change from 4th to 3rd at anything over 10mph !! I have fitted a new clutch slave cylinder also.
Please help people, I'm at my wits end Confused

Maybe you got a bad replacement gearbox?
Why not find some gearbox whiz and get him to do an overhaul (without the receipt of course ;-) )

Peugeot 206 1.6 XT - 09/2003
Toyota Corolla GT Coupé - 09/1984
Yonzie - 09/1980

Not a bad idea Yonzie, perhaps I could sell the spare. One just sold on ebay £186.00 Stirling Huh That's more than a type 9 bellhousing !!
I wonder if the problem could be with spigot bearing in the crankshaft ??
Anyone ??

A rebuilt of your gear box will cost to much...
Here in Greeece you need about 500 euros for a rebuild
and a 250 + fittment for a good used one.

Many T50 i know of have problems, mine dont change from 3 to 2...

What's that Ford gearbox thing, never heard about it?
And what's that W supra box thing? See bellhouses for the W, still I dont know why?

Most of the "W" series gearoxes are stronger than the AE86's T50. If I'm not mistaken, Jay from GB (he's registered here) has a one in his car - if he owns the same Turbo 86 I've seen in Banzai some time ago.

Ahhh, VTEC. All the lag, none of the turbo. It's like waiting for bad sex.

It may be that some of the gearboxes shift more precisely, but I don't think you'd notice any kind of difference between the T50 and any other Toyota unit from the 80's. It may be different after rebuild, but again, it depends on how well the gearbox was reassembled.

I have a Quaife straight cut close ratio type 9 'box sat in my shed but it will need a bellhousing, clutch, spigot bearing, modified mount and modified prop. to make it fit, all in about £400 probably be worth it but it's a shame not to use either of the Corolla boxes for what maybe a simple fault Undecided
