Got an AE86, weird model?

Hello guys. I´m Alex, I live in Chile and cars are one of my major hobbies.

I have a turbo miata wich is full of upgrades, and some time ago I got a rare JDM 1986 Toyota Corolla GT (Sprinter GT), which is an AE82 with 4AGELU engine, 4 wheel disc brakes, etc. It was supposed to be a track project to race it in lesser categories that would not allow the miata to run.

The problem is I got hooked with the nice-reving engine, and soon fell in love with the car! now being a RWD-nazi, i just couldn´t take it anymore: the car needed traction on the proper wheels. I searched for a long time, since these cars got in very few numbers to my country (actually the number is 13 hehe).

Last week i finally got it. It´s a 1986 Levin, which has a "GTi" ?? sticker. I don´t know if you guys have ever seen that denomination for a AE86, i´ve searched on the net to no avail. Any way to know if it has LSD other than opening the rear differential?

The car has been poorly maintained, and it´s going to need a lot of work to be competitive, but i´m determined to do it!

The first mods will be removing everything from the interior, installing a full 8-point cage, race seat and harness. Then i will focus on the suspension.

This sticker (badge actually) is from another car, a AE92 most likely.

Give us a pic of the engine, so we can tell you if its a GT -with LSD- or an SR5 -no LSD!

Since your car has 4 disk brakes its probably a GT Twincam 16V AE86

You can't tell if the car has LSD by the engine mate. There were twincam's sold without LSD, Djexors car for instance is a GT without LSD.

Alex, there are a couple of ways to figure out if your car has LSD. You can see it by the VIN number of the car, allthough I still don't know how but I'm sure Robokill or TE71Corolla or someone else will clue you in.
The other way is to jack up your car so your rear wheels are off the ground and turn one of your rear wheels by hand. If both wheels turn in the same direction you have LSD, if the wheels turn in oposite direction you either have an open diff,or a broken LSD.

Duhhhh I have no pics of the engine i can tell you that it´s a "blue top" (with TVIS).

I will check the LSD jacking up the car, that technique doesn´t work in miatas since it´s a torsen LSD, but i didn´t know the LSD in the ae86 is a clutch pack.... so it should work, thanks!

There's a code under the VIN number in every toyota that is indicated by "C/Tr A/Tm" these are for short of "Color/ Trim - Axle/ Transmission".

So the third code there is the axle code. Next, you can probably find what yours means here: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages...o/diff.htm

Guys here is a note for the books! On your

Toyota Motor Corporation plate (id plate of the chassis) is a code to see if you have LSD.

There is first some info regarding wheigt of the car and what can be pulled followed bij a mode code and then:

C/TR A/TM (info about driveline)

xxx.xxxx.???(3 or 5).xxxx

The 3rd part of the code is the rear end code. If the last of the 4 numbers is a 3 or a 5 it was originally with LSD. It could be someone broke it and that is has been replaced. But lets not think about that situation.

The GT-i badge does indeed look like the ones used on the AE92 GT-i.
