Happy 40th birthday AE86!
I just realized the AE86 just had its 40th birthday! Hurray!
40 years ago the AE86 was first shown to the press on May 12th 1983. I read this date somewhere in one of the Japanese magazines and forgot about it until today, so I check and found out last Friday it just happened!

I also put a post on the front page with a few excerpts of the rabbit hole I'm going through:
http://www.aeu86.org/2023/05/14/happy-40...ueno-ae86/

This also means the first few AE86es produced are starting to become 40 years old as well!

Mine just passed its last required MoT
Free road tax too!
I wonder if it's GRETA compliant with its big cams and 180hp? Dodgy

Yes it is because you are using an old car that otherwise would have been thrown away and a new car had to be constructed which is using way more scarce earth materials like lithium. Much worse for the planet. Wink

It's strange to think of the car being so old. Can the 86 stop getting any older now? It's making me feel ancient.

Mine was regged in May '84, most likely somewhere in Aichi prefecture. Production date - no idea. Is it possible to get that from the VIN somehow?

I have the old Toyota EPC running on my pc, I think the month of build can be found in there, but not sure if you can find out the exact build date like you can with Volkswagen.

Just as i thought, only month of production is shown.
The actual production date should be in the data somewhere, but i don't know how to fish it out. Probably means trawling through a lot of txt files.

There is a lot more data in the EPC than it shows on the surface. But I haven't found out yet how to extract the exact production date from it yet. Juicebox made an attempt some time ago, but they failed as well.
There used to be a website with the production numbers per month, but the bookmark I made is unfortunately down. I copied them somewhere and I'll put them on the website tomorrow once I have found it.
Edit: I could also make a simple form where you can submit your serialnumber and then it will tell you which month it was produced and in which factory. Wink

I have posted the AE86 production data here:
http://www.aeu86.org/technical/ae86-and-...tion-data/
AE85 production data will follow soon. The idea about submitting the serialnumber will also be implemented soon. Wink

Oh wow, cool info! That means mine was made in March '84 at Higashi plant.

I made a crude version too lookup the production year, month and plant here:
http://www.aeu86.org/search-production-d...your-ae86/
Apparently it isn't that difficult to create Wordpress plugins after all! Hurray!
(that is if you know your way around in php)

Just like my statement above: I still need to add the AE85 data in there as well, however I don't think there will be high demand for that. Big Grin
