Hi all,

Ive recently joined the site so am still learning about the AE86. It seems to have everything for me! Big Grin After a bit of a discussion with some people Im beginning to get an idea about different models etc.

I have noticed (in the inspiration pics thread) that there are 2 distinct shapes. Im hoping people will be able to clarify what shape is what and also advise as to what the pro's and con's are to the different shape.

Theres 2 front end variations

Trueno = pop up lights
Levin = "normal" lights

Then you have the 2 body shape variants

Coupe (2 doors and a conventional boot)
Hatchback (2 doors and a hatch back)

Then for all of those there are some minor cosmetic changes depending on when the car was built and where it was destined. US market ones had HUGE ugly bumpers for example

Brilliant.... I have had a look at that post and to be honest it leave me a bit confused as I know very little of the car at the moment. I am assuming that the black car in the pic above is the coupe varient and Im also told it is only available by import??

Handling wise... is there any major difference?

Dunc,

Indeed, in your part of the world only the 3 door version with fixed lights (levin) was sold.

The 2 door version with fixed lights was sold this side of the northsea, but the popup light 2 door version (or any popup light (trueno) version) where only sold in de USA and Japan and maybe Australia, not sure about that last one. There are some exceptions but they are rare..

As for handling, there is only a slight difference between 2 door and 3 door versions. The 3 door is a little less 'strong' in the rear due to the open structure. But you'd have to be into serious racing to notice really.

and the 3 door (hatcback) is also a bit heavier coz of the big rear window. The coupe was more prefered in racing and ralling coz of theese two things.. (prehaps better aerodynimics too???)

But again, you had to be in some serious racing to mind those diferences.. track width and wheelbase (and everything else) is the same..
