Ian.G's Track/Drift Levin.
Well - myself and a friend spent a little time last night stripping down the engine so that we can remove it from the car. Only a few photos as there is notthing really to look at.

2 more people have heard the engine running now and they think its a big end 2 - so out comes the engine.

Found a few interesting things of note so far...

My bumper bar brackets are a joke (see below) - anyone have any proper ones about ?

The #1 injector (at the front of the engine) has a broken clip and its harness was held on with a zip tie LOL. Looks like the O-ring seals are knackered as fuel residue on the outside of the rail (yikes - explains the bad smell of fuel LOL). Maybe a good time to get the injectors checked and new o-rings.

Wiring loom is MASSIVE - my auto electrician friend is prepared to build up a new lightweight loom for me - in fact he alread builds and supplies lightweight mk2 escort looms to a lot of the historic rally guys in the UK.

So tonight I will hopefully have the inlet and exhaust sides of the engine stripped. I have to remove all the power steering pipework and totally remove the entire air-con system (this is staying off the car and will be for sale is its in good condition)

Its fun - but everything is so dirty compared to working on my westfields. Hopefully I will get a chance to clean things up as we put it back together.

A dilema I have now is - should I empty the engine bay and spray it ?

Hi Ian, you bumper brackets do look to be a bit cut down, but they are not very big normally. I considered putting in a cross piece to help protect the radiator in low speed bumps, its very vunerable.

I'm still talking with the guy at jblood, they make fibreglass brackets and i'm hoping to be able to offer them soon, but maybe not soon enough for you.

The engine does tend to kill a big end especially if the oil supply weakens, i've killed one myself in the past.

O rings from Toyota, its easy to pinch one as you put them in.

If you want a new looking engine bay, nows the time to do it, especially if you like making work for yourself.

I dont think the loom will be happening any time soon.
Engine bay tart up is not a priority so I may actually just give it a good clean when the engine is out. There are bits that need painting to stop them from rotting like the battery tray and stuff - but they can be done quickly.

As for the front bumper bracket (or more importantly the cross member that WAS welded on) we will have to make a new one when it goes back together.

The bumper bar is now off the car for a fair while I imagine - so I may speak with jamie. I dont want to spend money on a copy right now though as I may need save some for other things depending on what else is broken in the engine.

I think I just have to be really careful I dont decide to do too many other jobs just because the engine bay is empty - otherwise it will be off the road for a long long time.

Damn ian,

Some tough luck, hope you get her back together again fast.. Dont rush it though, better to have the car off the road for a couple of extra days, then to have it up and running in notime only to see it brake again....

Odo says 210,000kms. We'll see how the engine is but it was upgraded more recently that that reading.

Bit more work on the car the last few days. I am tired as hell from too much stress at work at the moment so this is going quite slowly.

Last night I only spent a short time on the car - and that was removing the exhaust manifold and bit of front pipe where the cat should go.

Tonight the alternator and its bracket came off - along with the inlet side of the engine. Few useful things found out

1. We have a large port head.
2. Difficult to say if any porting on the inlet side has taken place as I cant get the camera in close. Adapter plate was a proper swine to get off but its free now.

3. Now you can clearly see how the vacuum can has been done.

4. You can also see on the ITBs that the original vacuum outlets are not being used. 4 larger vacuum ports have been placed into the adapter plate - these are not especially cleanly done inside the ports on the plate itself but I guess it does the trick. Anyone hazard a guess as to why this would be done ?

5. And just for Zax - here is how the regular throttle position sensor is used in conjunction with the the throttle bodies. The shaft that moves the butterly on the outside of the body just connects straight on. When we put this back together I will check that all the butterflys are calibrated.

So there we are. Next few jobs are to remove the water lines that run to the blower, the power steering pump and the aircon pump. After this the engine can come out. I'm not sure if I should leave the gearbox on or split them ?

Ian, could you please post some detailed pics of the master cilinder stopper? (cusco I presume?). It looks a bit more complicated than most others I have seen...
