Igntition timing
Sorry for the new topic but I haven't found this elsewhere.
Which direction should I adjust the distributor (on the 4AGE) to gain some advance timing? I think it is called so... Anyways, I want to have about 10-12 degrees BTDC (a little bit more than factory setting) and I think I have 0 or less now caused by something... Thanks! |

Hmmm, I'm not sure, but Billzilla wrote something about camadjustments:

Thanks, it's not about camadjustments. It's about ignition timing which needs the distributor to be adjusted clockwise or counterclockwise.

If you want the timing earlier (+10 degrees), you should turn the distributor clockwise (towards cabin of car).

I've tried it. When idle I turned it a few degrees and suddenly I heard a bang from my air filter. I turned it backwards a bit and got confused. May I have the correct timing and something else...something more s**k is my problem?

Is that true that if I turn the distributor 1 degrees in either direction, then the ignition timing will be 1 degrees "more" or less" depending on the direction?
That would mean that I tried to adjust it a bit "brutal". |

Just get it done correctly or borrow a strobe light somewhere yourself... Turning the static timing by hand is not the best idea cause you never know where it ends up.
Also the ECU corrects a lot of the timing so it's probably not that far off 10 degrees during driving. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

You're right Ivan. ECU handles the ignition on rpms higher than idle. But what is my problem...
Might you can help me to find it out. On lower rpms the car yanks (is this the correct word for it?). Seems to have no power. On rpms between 2500-3500 it has a small amount of power but is still catastrophic. Max rpms are about 5000 in this current state also without any power. My exhaust was leaky, I've changed. My spark plugs and wires were 100 years old, I changed them all. And this symptom is still there. Very confused... |

It does sound like poor timing setup, have you checked the distributer is not a tooth out ?
Pretty straight forward, use a socket on the main crank and turn it over until the timing mark on the pully lines up with the timing mark on the cover. Open up oil filler cap, is there a mark on the top of the camshaft, if not your 180 degrees out, turn the motor over with the socket until the timing marks line up again, now there should be a mark on the camshaft. At this point the rotor should be pointing to number one on the distributer cap. If not mark the position it needs to point at, take out the dissy and line it up properly. |

Na, 1 degree at the dizzy, will equal 2 degrees at the crank, as the dizzy will be spinning half the speed of the crankshaft |
