Info on spring spacers

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering if anybody knows about this. I've been thinking about getting nicer springs for the rear of my car but I always end up with springs that lower the car to much.

So the other day JonT gave me a link for some spacers you can buy. They are basically an alluminium ring with the same outer diameter as the spring but with a ledge so the spring fits firmly on the ring.

Now with shipping these things cost more then it would cost me to get custom springs made but it does seem like it would be something that can be recreated with not to complicated tools.

So couple of questions:
first, does anybody have any experience with these spacers, are they safe? I'm really worried about the spacer coming loose. From what I gathered the spacer was placed on the axle below the spring so if the car jumps, off comes the spacer?

second, does anyone have better pictures of these things?

third, what type of materials would be suitable, offcourse aluminium or steel (but that would be heavy I guess). How about the stuff those hard bushings are made off? I heard you can cast that stuff into form?

last, would anyone else be interesting in this?

Those spacers are made by TRD, so I guess they'll be safe enough. Polyurethane doesnt seem like a likely candidate though. There is just to much force and rubbing going on, it would tear apart in no time. I belive aluminium is the way to go. You could drill small holes through the spacer and attach it to the spring using tiewraps or something like that, or put some sort of rubber on the top that creates an interference fit with the spring.

Personally I wire lock my springs to their seats so they cant fall out! The wire is aircraft locking wire which is really strong and durable! (I work with aircraft so its free for me )
I have had tailor made springs for my pug 306 before and decided that 200lbs springs with +2" springs were for me (forest rallying) only to find out that the car was 'topped out' constantly! I learned my lesson then as these springs were no good to anyone so I lost £85 having them made!
Spend some time on finding info such as poundage ratings etc!
My corolla runs MK2 escort springs which are +2" and 175lbs rated! Standard ride height just about!

kipsy, what kind of wire do you use? What does the aircraft locking wire do? Where is it used on the aircraft?

I just want to know tis because it seems to be a really great idea to wire lock the springs. I have the same problem with lowering my car. I can't lower her as much as I want because of the springs coming out...you know...

this wire is for locking of screws i think, but i am interested too for fotos how you done it.

the spacers are good idea, make it from duraluminium and the iner seat to fit the spring little bit konical and then locks with wire or tie wraps thanks for this ideas

My rear axle is wired to the body , with two metallic cable that cou can easily find in hobby shops.I drilled holes on brake line support(on axle) and of course somwhere on body
It last for years now , and resist to rallye driving...

TRD never make rear spring spacer. In Japan, There is some shop that make rear spring spacer for AE86. These are the pictures:
