Is it worth it?
Ok so I found a guy selling an 86 in my area. It is in wonderful condition, and was maintained really well. He also has all of the invoices from the mechanics and it was also worked on at Toyota garages. It's a 4AG-E engine that is newly rebuilt and so are the breaks. There is barely any rust on the body except a small amount around the left rear tire. It is a white hatchback and I must say it's quite gorgeous. The same guy sold another 86 previously, same upkeep, only difference was it had 216,000km on it, and it wasn't a hatch.

He told me to make an offer and I haven't yet but I am prepared to spend anywhere from 8-12k. I just have two questions... What should I offer him? I don't want to offer too low and insult him but I don't want to offer too high and pay way more than necessary. And secondly, is it worth buying. I'm still a highshool student working part time. I am prepared to do maintenance on it and I understand all of the costs that will come with it, I'm just thinking about base cost. From what I've read online most people say that 86s don't lose their value, so I was just wondering, say in a few years if I was forced to sell it due to financial constraints, would I be able to get near what I payed for it (Assuming I provide good maintenance).

Thank you Smile

Have you looked underneath the rear left corner? Most of the thime the corner wil be rusted if you take of the rear bumper.

A good engine/gearbox with a rusted body is worth 5000 euro to me. These days there are a lot of dreamers on the internet believing they own a car worth a whole lot of money when in fact you're owning a 25 year old rusted toyota that 95% of the world would not want for free..

A 100% original low mileage car that has no work done to it is worth some cash. A hachi with a rebuild engine and +200k has probably been around the block a couple of times Wink Not bad at all, if you want to build a trackday car. Just don't blow all your money on it believing it is priceless, because it is not.

Offer the guy 5000, if he says no, look for another one. If it's your first car, you can also look into an AW11. Great fun and cheaper than an 86.

Where are you from? Is the car in a mint condition or modified? Original AE86 in grade 1-2 are about 8-10K Euros. Modified ones or grade 3-4 cost uasally 3-6K Euro. I've never seen Hachis which were driveable (no complete rustbuckets) under 3k Euros.
Do you got any pictures of the car? Smile

You can see the rust is really minimal. I asked him for a photo of under the car but he has not responded yet. Also no picture of the interior.

Also I am in Canada so when I said 8-12k I meant in CAD. So that's about 5500-8500 euro I think.

Dosen't look too bad depending on the small info I would offer 4000€ (around 5600 CAD). If the interiour is in good condition and theres no big rust problem besides the rear fender maybe 6800 CAD max.

Thank you! Just one more quick question. Besides all of the info that I provided in this thread, he hasn't given me any other info. Are there any other questions that I should ask before making an offer, and what are some things I should look for when I see/drive the car?

Check very carefully those rear arches and also check the rear pockets.
Any rust on the rear arches is a potential problem.
I'm guessing the whole car has had paint, not just a replacement bonnet, so check for filler everywhere !
Rear pockets are viewed best from inside the hatch right down each side of the car near the spare wheel well.

The paint job looks pretty poor and rushed to me, so I'm with totta: you really need to check the car over to be sure it is in decent condition.
The rear pockets are usually the best place to look for rust on a hatchback, also check around the lower edge of the front windscreen, around the door hinges, and off course the sills, although those where likely patched up before paint.
