Major AE86 help needed!
Congrats on the great forums. As an enthusiast from the US I am impressed at the quality of the forums. I just joined today, but I have been reading several of the posts by the members!

I saw an ae86 sr5 with a blown motor for 500 USD (about 350 euros) and I decided to buy it (was it a good deal??).

Ill need to replace the engine, but this is my first engine swap. What is the absolute cheapest I can do an engine swap for just to get the car running--it does not have to be a great engine! I also want it to be an easy swap that requires little modification.

We are just trying to make this car "run". Right now it is pretty much stock with a blown engine. Just to make the car run without problems how much do you think it will cost and how long will it take? Everything else with the car is in great condition.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I dont have swap experience but I would do the GTS swap. Dont ask me how much work it will be but if you have a RWD hachi with at least a 16V twincam enige you will have a big smile driving it around!!

Easiest swap is another 50$ 4A engine from an SR5. By far the easiest swap. A GT conversion can get pretty big and costly quickly. That'll get you up and running at least. Not even that bad an engine for commuting and occasional fun in the rain. Good start. Then save up and drop something a bit more serious in.

Oh: total cost: Engine ~50$ (maybe free).. Fluids etc: 200$ (these small things always adds up to a lot.

Time investment: 4 six packs (equivalent to about 1 weekend of working on your car with friends.)

Yeah I'm with NoHachi on this one,

Drop in another 4AC and get the car running again first, with a good haynes book it can be a piece of cake even for a novice, those engines are a piece of cake and it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg and it can be loads of fun and a great learning experience. Depending on what happened to the engine it may not even require a complete replace.

Upgrading the engine can be for later, get to learn the car first, that way you can see if she really is a keeper. There is nothing worse then putting a great engine into a shell that you find out is crap.

What part of the world are you at?

Also check out http://www.club4ac.com, loads of SR5 enthousiasts over there.

I agree with No-Hachi and Mux: That seems like the way to go.

I am located in California--specifically the Bay Area (near San Francisco). How on earth will I buy a 4ac engine? I mean where would it be sold at?

Also can you elaborate on the miscellaneous parts that come up to 200 dollars?

This is our first engine swap, and while my friends and I know much of the theory behind the engine this is really our first hands-on work.

Oh yeah and one last question: Friend and I are thinking of painting the car as well. Do we need to strip it completely down to the shell? If so how long does it take to strip and reassemble?

Thanks very much!

go to the junkyard. many sr5's about. or visit some of the stateside AE86 sites. a lot of people throw away 4a-c to do the gt-s swap.

how blown is the motor? could be something simple. might not even need to swap it.

Oil, cooling liquid, sparkplugs, new distributor cap, possibly new ignition leads (not always), oil filter, fuel filter, various gaskets that you find. That kind of general maintenance stuff. Usually accompanied by a bunch of things you break. Couple of stripped bolts. Tool you had to hire to get stripped bolt out etc. 200$ seems to be the avg. price it all adds up to usually.

Alright we shall go to the junkyard then; Any way to test if a motor works before dropping it into the car?

Nohachi: That sounds great. Thanks for all the help?

Anyone else have any comments/advice?
