Spitfire Wrote:Huge thanks for those pics, thats exactly what I needed to see Got any more shots of the cutting and welding process please? As requested as took some photos as i went along yesterday. This is how it started With a little help from a 4 inch grinder, a drill with a 6 mm bit to drill out the spot welds and my trusty hammer and chisel i removed the rust. Then using cardboard i made a template to fit the first area to be plated. Once i was happy with it i then cut the shape from a sheet of 12 gauge steel. Then cut the plate as nessasary, check and double check its the perfect fit, modify as required. I left a lot of over hang towards the wheel archs due to not yet knowing how far back i'll be cutting them back. Using this tool (don't know what its called) i shaped the edge of the steel. I then drilled a 6mm hole in the plate to allow me to spot weld it into place. Then continue to weld. The large lump of weld in this picture is what happens if you don't remove all of the rusty metal, the welding blows holes in it which then needs to be filled. This is a pain in the arse! I then used the same method to make the lower plate in this picture. Note the spot welds, i drill a 6mm hole in the plates when welding on to a flat surface. Once again, all rust removed and a plate made. Same plate from another angle. Then came the floor plate, i drilled the spot weld out from the cross brace on the floor tp allow the plate to sandwich between that and the fllor pan. The result from a good fews hours work. The sill will be done at a later stage. I was getting grief from my other half so never got time to finish the suspension section or wheel arch section  Hope thats of some use to you |

Heya!
Gratulations to your eight-six! The most I like at your car is the brown-black interior and the fact, that it´s a hatchback! *inlove* But there´s one thing worries me...the underbody...! Rust everywhere...is that "normal" for AE´s?? The underbody from my VW Derby for example lookes like 1983 today!! Greets Roman |

Nice work! I see that it has quite a bit more rust than it looked like in the first place, but its nice to see that you haven't given up
Momo-gt: Some rust is normal, but you should be able to find one with less than this one Sarcasme is just one of the things I offer Daily driver: '92 Toyota Carina E GTI Rebuilt project: '86 Levin hatch |
