Whats a distribution belt? If you meen timing belt, its fairly easy. There are marks on both belt and cam gears

Hey Jan,
yeah timing belt and I know its fairly easy, I've read through the procedure a couple of times when I was tinkering with a CRX but I have actually never done it nor do I have a manual at this time. Most likely I will be able to do it by myself once my haynes manual is in (still looking for a toyota manual copy) . I just want to make sure I don't do it wrong, be kinda nasty if I dont line it up correctly or dont tention it correctly. I'm also thinking about leaving the dust cover off and spray painting the camshaft sprockets in a nice metalic blue color (only front surface). Anyone know if this has any unwanted side effects? As I said earlier: leaving the covers of allows debries to reach the timing chain etc etc. Unless you are building a show car i would let this particular rice boy modification pass.
Start bugging Kristian about his see-through cover, that would get you 90% of the look without the risk of ruining the engine. A wheel to steer the front of the car A pedal to steer the rear |

I've only done a timing belt change when my engine was still in the shed, waiting for installation. It couldnt be more easy. First you align everything for top dead center on the nr 1 cilinder. Under the oil filler cap you should see an indentation in the camshaft when the piston is at tdc on the correct stroke. After that you just put the car in gear on handbrake, get the pulley bolt off (which can be a bitch sometimes..airtools are great for this one). Remove the tensioner, install the new belt tightly and in the correct direction. Install a new belt tensioner!
That should be it..lot easier to do on an ae86 than it is on a CRX I think. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

Good luck...you should have a pretty good idea about what things might pop up at the MOT since you know your way around cars a bit. My main problems usually seem to be rust, tires, exhaust gasses and electronics.
Worn steering knuckles and wheel bearings arent uncommon as well if the car hasnt been maintained for a while. [edit] How could I forget the ol'exhaust...it's as if it's made of swiss chease [/edit] FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |
