Dr.Ling Wrote:Morten, can't you (or the guy you used) get me such an engine as well? I'm not so sure of the bluetop being a hopeless starting point as you seem to do, but I guess it all comes down to what you are trying to do with it. What do you mean by getting you an engine as this? A base redtop engine, all the parts to build one, or a complete engine including everything? I can try to help you along the way with what i can, but can't make any promises on behalf of the engine guru that did a lot of the work... '85 AE86 4AGE, '94 SW20 3SGTE, '83 KP61, 72' RA21 |

Well, I'm not really sure what I want to do, but I really like the sound of those ITB's
My starting point is the same as you, if you have a Swiss import; AFM, 9,4:1 CR, bigport/TVIS 4AGE, but with the first gen 7rib block (with the "heavier" internals), so at one point I thought about turbocharging this thing with a small turbo...... but it seems like cheating and a bit ghetto...... doesn't feel right.... Engine-wise I wouldn't mind paying some guru to build me a really nice rev-monster, and I could just work a bit harder at my dayjob to afford it... Then I could work on all the other stuff like suspension, chassis etc. etc. myself. The "redtop" (is it really 140ps?) seems like a better starting point, isn't it why you chose it yourself? I just don't know where to get one, and what guru to give all my moneys to 1987 Levin 3d - daily drifter (to be) 1990 SW20 MR2 w/ gen3 3S-GTE - daily poser |

Are you sure you have the heavier internals even if you have a 7-rib block? I got a parts engine along with one of my engines, and this had 7-rib block and bigport head (was supposed to come from an aw11). I opened this ut to check the condition, and to see if I was lucky enough to get the strong internals for a turbo project, but even though it had a 7-rib block, the crank and rods were the 40/18mm size....
Plenty reasons for me when I chose the Redtop. My stock engine had a broken crankshaft, and needed a new engine anyways. The redtop was newer, stronger internals that can handle some revs, higher compression as stock, smaller ports giving slightly better low-end, oil squirters under pistons for cooling, better oil-return from the head..... For a real rev-monster though, the bigport head might actually be better. Remember this is what is used for the FA engines. Also I seem to recall a dyno test of a stock engine just swapping heads (same cams, manifolds etc.), the smallport was better or equal up to about 7000rpm on that test, but over 7k the bigport shone due to the bigger ports. And for a real rev-monster you would actually spend quite some time on the track around there. Enough about that. If the redtop is what you want, just contact Egon. He has them in stock at all times, and they do not cost much for a long-block. Regardsless of what engine you start with though, a lot of parts are interchangable, so you can start with the one you have and build bit by bit if you want, then learning as you go of what you get from the different parts. Cams, exhaust, megasquirt, itbs, trumpets, valvetrain ++ are among these parts (exept the manifold/adapter for the ITB's) PS! the blacktop might be the best of them all though, but need a bit more work to get in the car. This even has the ITB's as stock, so you dont have to buy them on the side '85 AE86 4AGE, '94 SW20 3SGTE, '83 KP61, 72' RA21 |
