Reinforcement for the AE86...
I must say I do like that Batter relocation strut bar.
I'm still somewhat new to these cars but what would you guys say is the weaker points in the ae86 chassis that would show the greatest improvements from braces/bars? ![]() |

Reinforcement for the AE86...
Somehow missed this entire thread last time...lots of very amusing braces in the pictures. Some are pure bling (bar across the rear of the hatch) others are just plain mad (bar 10cm from the tranny Xmember that does exactly the same thing)(rails running from front to back...whuhahahaha).
Others look quite good, like the subframe strengthening inserts and anything fixing the front strut towers. But really, some things do absolutely nothing but add weight: other examples are the large "tri-bar" in the rear..you fix the shocktowers to piece of weak sheetmetal in the trunk...that'll do a lot of good..What you want to do is somehow tie them into the front suspension. that would mean connecting the shocktowers to pieces of the frame that are in the loadpath of the front suspension..difficult to do properly without a cage, so best left aside for weightsaving purposes. Gotta agree with NoHachi. A lot of those look like nothing more than decoration! If you are serious about rigidity there is only one way to go and thats a massive welded in rollcage.

Hmmm, I'll make it a sticky topic, eventhough someone still needs to go through all stickeys in the technical section and see if they can organize things over here.
![]() Making it sticky will ofcourse make it clear it needs to be found afterwards, and I agree with you it does contain a lot of info. ![]() 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop: ![]() |

In Club4ag, Taka says that giving a thurough treatment with welding points gets the chassis stiffer than with a roll cage. And that the roll cage is only better in case of rolling the car over.
I think that some bars here are just for show. Front and rear tower strut bars, and maybe the panhard one are good things to install, the rest... well, I don't know... Best regards |

apardal..sorry but don't take everything taka or moto say as gospel. There is no way to get a shell stiffer then through a rollcage. Just take a look at the cages present in WRC or touring/DTM cars. You don't need those elaborate tube constructions in case of a rollover, just a couple will do. They are there for body stifness purposes.
It is true that most of the cages sold on the market are in fact "just a couple of tubes" and offer only roll-over protection. A true cage should be thought out extensively and connected to the body at as many places as possible. The difference is quite shocking.
