ok got the car starting, the engine was not cranking fast enough with the cold and heavier oil.
the ecu wont run the standard rev counter and i want it to work cos it looks better. the ecu guys said the output from ecu is 5v and the dash needs 12v. the fact that its on coil pack and not a dizzy isnt helping it either. same prob when swapping in a 4agze engine and i was wondering if anyone knew of some one who has the converters to make the old ae86 rev counter work with the signal from coil packs.

Its gotta go whoosh or give a whine!!!!

Ehm.. lemme think about that one.. wouldnt you get in trouble anyway because one coilpack fires at half the speed of the regular coil?

i dont know. do you think its possible to use the back of a rev counter that works on the signal and retro fit it to the back of the ae86 gauge so i can have the original looking gauge?
as far as im aware its not speed. the problem is cos is twin firing and the gaugh cant pick up the twin signal, i think.
oh and does the fwd 4age starter have better gearing to give a faster cranking speed?
also, when the car starts it is starved of revs for bout 1 min you need to give a slight bit of throttle. the idle screw is set correctly, any ideas on what it could be? it only from cold.

Uhm, I never heard of a coil pack before but judging by your answers I think you mean there's actually two coils right...

In general it should always be possible to connect a rev counter directly to the connection between coil and ECU (or whatever else is controls the ignition, contact breakers or electronic ignition) ...

If I get it right you have two coils that are each doing half of the sparks... If so, I'd try taking two diodes and connect the tacho to both coils. So each diode goes with it's cathode side on the wires from a coil to the ECU and you connect both anode sides of the diodes together and take signal from there...

Ivan do you think I am anywhere near right here?
