Shortshifter TRD - Issues

It's possible... it has been known for the plastic bush to split or even
break into pieces... but very unusual, and takes quite a lot of abuse.
However, here are a couple of things I found when I installed this...



From a silky smooth change with the factory shifter, I suddenly found
that my shifting became "notchy" and that every now and then I couldn't
select the next gear if I changed quickly. Needless to say, I was pissed
about this after installing "the best AE86 short shifter ever made". I was
tempted to swap back to the factory shifter, but decided to persevere
with the C's shifter for a while and see what happened.

I believe the initial problem was caused by two things. First the new bush
had much less "slop" in the shift sliders, and needed to be accurately lined
up to drop into the slider. With use and a bit of wear, the bush now slips
into place much more easily. The second factor is that I continued to
change gears moving the gear knob at the same speed I always had done
with the factory shifter. Due to the faster action of the short shifter, the
synchros were having less time to work, and the gears would baulk (fail
to engage).

The T-50 is an old gearbox and does not take kindly to banging through
the gears too fast. I had to re-learn my shift technique to overcome the
initial notchy action, and get back to gliding the gears into place rather
than forcing them.

I also found that shift quality started going downhill with the brand of
gearbox oil I was using. After a bit of research I found another brand, and
also adjusted the amount of oil filled into the box. Since making these
changes, I have found that that gear noise reduced, synchro action and
shift qualty both improved.

Long story but goes to show that bolting on a short shifter in an AE86
can cause a few problems that take a while to sort out

It's a very well known problem, everyone I know sold trd quick shift after awhile. Except you
And the shifter tilted to the right, doesn't help too.

Yes... putting a short shifter into a T-50 is a waste of time amd money.
If I hadn't paid top dollar for mine I would have changed back to the OEM
shifter. But now that I have got used to it, there is no longer a problem.
And the gangster lean works fine for RHD
