Ivan141 Wrote:An ae86 on the other hand is a spartan, noisy, rough around the edges car with primitive handling, that can be made very fun to drive. Thats what makes em great! Ok, couple of tips for you:
Try and find themk1 1.8l 5 spoke alloys. At just 5kg's these are the weight of racing rims 10 times the price of these..just look at the weight of Volk, SSR etc. Your miata probably rides a lot worse because of these rims, its not designed for heavy weight wheels. If you were luckily enough to get the 14" BBS special edition rims (typical BBS design) and find a set: these were the lightest rims ever available on a stock car I think. At 4 kg's it beats most racing rims out there and looks very cool! Suspension: Do not lower it with springs...A stock mx5 has about 6cm of travel before bumpstop contact. Every centimeter you lower it, reduces this travel. Once on the bumpstops you are basically driving a car without springs, harsh, difficult to controll and without proper dampening: dangerous. If you want to lower, you absolutely HAVE to use shocks with shorter shock bodies. Just like on the AE86, only much sooner. Luckily there are some excellent coilover choices for the mx5 that cost the same as just the front AE86 setup. Checkout the tein basic set for an excellent dirt cheap setup. Take a look at the monoflexes for a dual purpose setup that holds its own on the racetrack. LSD means changing the entire rear ppp, very expensive, but about the same price as a new ae86 cusco diff (unless you find a bargain). If you have the stock non-LSD non-VLSD diff (believe it has to be the 1.8 one though, not sure anymore)..you can upgrade the internals to RX7 clutch type LSD. Find an old FC, rip out the diff, rebuild the diff just as with ae86 (tighter clutches) and you have a much better drift setup. Probably cheaper then the torsen as well. Oh yeah..and for track use, please buy a rollbar. If you roll it, you're dead. Okay, one last remark :-) With an agressive allignment (have one done!) this car will hang onto the rear of lotus elises on short tight courses..Even when stock...They don't like this, especially when you tell them that it has zero modifications...You now represent the girly car community. make us prowd! ghe ghe ghe A wheel to steer the front of the car A pedal to steer the rear |
