Then first thing to check is the lightswitch itself... In the AE86 manual the electric repair section handles the lightswitch, so you should be able to see if the switch is causing it. Otherwise you can see in the same section some hints where to check for the backlightning on the gaugecluster connector and see if you can follow the cable and check it further down.
