Timing?
I was trying to set the timing on my 4AGE (installed in a 1972 MG Midget) and the previous owner has removed the connector needed to short out to set the timing. I went ahead and set the timing at 16 BTDC without the connector shorted. Is this correct?

if you don't short out the connector, you will never get it running right, even if you have the strobe on it to check the timing.

It says in the 4AGE Manual, that you should check the timing with the check connector short unplugged and it should be 16TDC, this is what I have set mine too. I can't find the check connector on the car, does anyone have pic of it and where is in in the loom??

yes it is a yellow connector, origninal it has a rubber insert thats covering the two pins of the connector.
You have to make a connection between the two pins and you can see the exact timing. regards gert-jan AE86 is a way of living and i like it sideways!! http://www.atectuning.nl |

It's best to fit the service link
Without the link the ignition timing will be affected by coolant temperature. If the engine is warm (and no service link fitted) the timing will be approx 16 deg BTDC at idle. Whilst cold, the timing will be much more advanced than 16degC. Also without the link the ECU will increase the advance in short bursts if the idle rpm falters. This will tend to make the timing look fuzzy with a timing light if the revs drop. Also the ignition timing will be rpm dependent without the service link. Make sure you keep your foot off the throttle as the 10 deg service timing only applies with the link fitted and your foot off the throttle. Obviously, once you have set the timing you should REMOVE the service link. (data correct for UK AW11 4A-GE so should be similar for AE86) |
