What price clean air ?
stock filter.bmp (Size: 425.3 KB / Downloads: 411) perf filter.bmp (Size: 423.99 KB / Downloads: 644) Here are a couple of logs from a Freedom ecu using the stock inlet air temp and MAP sensors, the difference between the two is the air filter. One uses a foam filter type with internal bell mouth attached to a piece of Samco hosing onto the throttle body. (31.8 air temp) The other log is the standard AE86 filter. (This log reads 23.2 air temp) Logs were taken within ten minutes of each other on a fully warmed engine and the outside air temp was the same. The outside air pressure was 766 mmHg and as can be seen there is a small restriction in the stock air filter compared to the performance one but the cooler, denser air from the stock filter more than makes up for it. Performance filter usually install with the filter located behind the
headlight like so... This gives it a chance to pick up cooler air flowing from the space around the the back of the bulb holder. With this installation I found the low rpm performance to be much the same as the stock filter. But above 5000 rpm the Apexi definitelt pulled harder (subjective ) Cheers... jondee86 |

Subjective ? I agree, mine certainly sounds like it makes more power with the foam filter.
As for air filtering an OEM paper filter is very good and looking at the graphs is there much to choose in actual air flow and its ability to fill the cylinders ? An analogue brain in a digital World |

Best position to pickup air is at mid of car, between hood and radiator.
Right where many of stock cars, including AE86, pick up their air in OEM configuration. |

Honestly I was never a fan of the stock setup on the AE86, at least when it's complete. The plastic pipe going across the radiator to pull in fresh air from the exhaust side isn't an ideal solution if you ask me.

Not that all factories are getting it done right, but it is a best place to get air.
Primarly because of the fact that air pressure is highest at the mid of the car. Subaru does it well: And many aftermarket producers: |
