Wheel adapters - track safe?
Kinda OT:
Steering wheel WILL shake over 100 kph when wheels spigot diameter > hub diameter without rings. Many cars, many times, sometimes more, sometime less but good spigot rings will be needed if there is difference in hub/spigot diameter. |

No it won't, steering wheel will shake if your tyres/wheels aren't properly balanced. I've been running wheels without spigot rings for years, if properly balanced there won't be ANY shake.

The issue is more about safety than wheels shaking.

totta Crolla Wrote:The issue is more about safety than wheels shaking. I can't believe that has something to do with spigotrings. At the moment your wheelnuts are torqued to the correct level, there is no real stress on the bolts/studs, as all of the force is 'transmitted' through the hub by the clamping force (i don't know how to put this correctly in english) and not on the bolts/studs. Wheel adapters - track safe?
Looking at this pic...
... it appears that the wrong studs were used, as there is clear evidence that the thread went all the way thru the rotor. Studs of the correct type have smooth shank inside the thickness of the rotor, with a larger diameter. The thread does not start until the stud is a small distance outside the rotor. Most likely the studs were not correctly torqued for the new larger diameter wheels, and this allowed the wheel or rotor to move on the hub. The studs were then subject to bending forces that caused a fatigue failure, probably originating in the root of the first thread. Hub centric rings would not have prevented this failure. The interweb is full of misinformation and psuedoscience promulgated by people who take as gospel the BS put out by other people who want to sell their products to a gullible public. The AE86 came from the factory with hubcentric wheels and shank and washer type lug nuts. This is the absolute best wheel and nut design without question. However, if non-hubcentric wheels and cone faced nuts were as dangerous as some people make out, they would be used in warfare instead of bullets Cheers... jondee86 |
