Wide Track 86
Has anyone fitted wide spacers to their ae86? Wide as in +40mm front and rear? I’m not concerned so much with body clearance as I’m using fender flares. I’m more interested in the effect on steering and braking. I’m fitting 16x8 with +20mm offset on the front

While your fender flares may cover the will another issue you will face up front is clearing the bumper and the mudgard depending which way the wheel is turned. At least that's an issue I faced with 15x8 ET0 when fitted with 25mm spacers before I switch to longer lower arms. Adjustable tension arms also help to position the wheel properly back to front, especially when the car is lowered too.

Some bump steer but that's related to lowering rather than the extra width.

I’m fitting 16x8 with +20mm offset on the front I used to run complete S13 front subframe with susupenion parts (along with a SR20DET) to fill the front arches (CBY overfenders) with 15x8 ET0 wheels. I would try to avoid using spacers thicker more then 5-10mm. Drifting - best fun you can have in your car with your pants on! |

Interesting. I’m approaching the point where I need to decide to add 40mm spacers all round, or 5mm spacers up front with standard arches and the smaller arch extensions (from Flo) at the rear (no spacers).
I know someone who has gone with 40mm, but his car is nearing completion and I don’t think it’s been driven yet. I was hoping for someone who has done it to say the difference in scrub radius made the car better/worse/undriveable at low speed but fine when moving/more or less self-correcting, squirming under high speed braking etc. Ps. It’s non power steering with a quick rack (so I’m expecting heavy steering at parking speeds anyway) |

As said at this range you need to look into moving the pivot point out and not just space/offset the wheel. Obviously taking this to the extreme will need some changes to the suspension at one point too as the minimum camber will increase, tension arms need to be longer/mount more adjustable and so forth.

@Bean like this?
...I wish I'd known more about wheels before I bought the 16x8 et20 and 16x9 et0 set, not ideal but I like how they look. Having added 25mm to the lower control arms, if I push the camber plates out fully I'm left with a small amount of negative camber. The positive offset means I need 5mm minimum spacers to allow the to clear the struts, if I don't set the coilovers too low |

Yes, something like that. I can't remember exactly which ones I've bought (it was over 10 years ago) but I think they were originally meant for the Carina or Corona and fitted my needs perfectly.
