I was suffering from engine no start since I got the car two months ago.
The previous owner said he changed a rebuild starter, so he suggests the problem is likely to caused by other electricity. As I do not have any clue, but I found the fuse box looks extremely disgusting, so I replaced it. The old fuse box The new fuse box Just after I installed the new fuse box, I could start the engine, but I found that the retractor light did not pop. Light ON, no pop: Beside replacing the fuse box here is more details: 1) Before replacing the box, the relay in GREEN circle is always generating heat, and it is no longer that hot in the new box, which I guess that solved the engine start problem(I hope...) 2) In the BLUE circle there is no RTR fuse in the new fuse box, which I believe the new fuse box was off a LEVIN, I put back the fuse, but the lights still don't pop... 3) the HEADLIGHT fuse in the old box is 15A vs 10A in the new box 4) I found one blue wire got loosen from the relay in RED circle, so I tried to plug it back My questions: a) Is the GREEN circle relay causing my engine start problem? b) How could I fix the pop light? |

A number of things, in no particular order
1. The relay in the green circle is most likely the EFI main relay. AFAIK this supplies power to the ECU for operating the EFI system (if you take this relay out, the EFI does not work). If the relay gets hot it could be that the contacts have high resistance from arcing... testing the relay would be a good idea. 2. You need to check that the new fuse box actually has proper pins for connecting the Headlght Retract Relay fuse to the wiring underneath. Sometimes the pins are missing if the fuse is not fitted at the factory. 3. The relay in the red circle is not a Toyota factory relay. Those two relays have been added later... they could be immobilizer relays for the alarm system, light relays, or a replacement for the factory retractor relay. Do you actually know what they are for/connect to ? 4. There is a lot of non-Toyota wiring in your pictures. Next to the red circle relay is something that looks like a key-operated isolator switch. 5. In the kick panel fuse box there is a 10 Amp RTR fuse. Check that this one is good. If that one blows the lights will not pop. Cheers... jondee86 |

Yeah, there is a lot of non stock things that I don't know....
The relay in RED is connected to the headlight....I am not 100% sure, as the wires are a bit mess.... The isolator is no useless now as I lost the key.... Back to the problem....it turned out the new fuse box did not fix the engine start problem, although I feel like a bit better than before.... I got the retractor work again by reversing the procedure, I put back the old fuse box and the retractor work immediately. jondee86 is absolutely correct, the pin out on the new LEVIN fuse box is not the same as the old TRUENO fuse box making the retractor not working. Do anyone know how to make the LEVIN fuse box work the same as TRUENO fuse box? I really want to replace the fuse box as you can see in the photo the old box is full of some type of gel, I don't know if those gel would decrease connectivity and making the EFI relay heat up....but these gel looks disgusting.... |

I am having similar problems getting my Levin headlights work with my new fusebox as well..
I have to physically open up the headlight relay by prying off the black cover and then move the internal switch pin inside the relay over to the on-position to force the headlights to be on all the time.. Inside the car On/Off switch, besides audibly clicking some relays, has no effect, Dimmer switch on/off has no effect, no-one knows what the problem is as this car has an electrical curse, so I`m stuck as well 1x AE86 84` Zenki Coupè Levin 4A-GE 20v 1x AE86 83' Zenki Coupe Levin 4A-GE 16v 1x TA60 82' Sedan 2T 8V 1x TA40 78` MK1 Zenk/Pre-Facelift Wagon 4A-GE 16v |

Unfortunately, there is no easy way of solving these problems. You have
to sit down with the wiring diagram and try and identify and trace every single wire. Then when you know what should be happening, you can start from the control switch and work your way towards the lights, looking for something that does not do what it is supposed to do. Wires that are broken or connect to nothing. Spare plugs, bad joins, short circuits, blown fuses or relays that have worn out contacts. The Levin lighting controls are straight forward compared to the Trueno with pop-up lights. Good luck with finding the problem. Cheers... jondee86 |

The fuseboxes are compatible! And switchable!
I've converted my Levin to Trueno and with the two relays. The blue under the dash, and the black behind the headlight got my car working with the trueno light display! All correctly! |

Theres lots of blue wires under the dash (Including the one to the speed sensor), do you know the specific location of it?

For the lights to work you only need 2 relays!
