flywheel options - What are you using?

my thoughts exactly. why in earth would you lighten the flywheel close to the center?!

but if i could shave as little as 1 or 2 kilograms near the radius (edge), that would be a good gain. but ivan scared me with this hard on the outside, soft on the inside thing. so i wonder how are ae86 flywheels made.. or could you cut/dril holes through it?

Apolan there is no problem to remove material from the peripheral section. Then ballance the flywheel.
People remove material from center and at the back of friction surface because this is easiest (using lathe instead of mill) and sometimes they even missed the ballancing etc.
PS: Steel flywheels can be thinner ! Stock flywheels are cast iron.

You can probably lighten it and have it properly rebalanced on a high-speed balancing machine of some sort and not have to worry about this..since these are some extreme revs.. but just consider the effects if should it go wrong if you do this the "budget" way.
At the revs the car in the vid is pulling..the stock flywheel could possibly explode to I guess (if it had any minor cracks in it).

Yes, one-piece casting.
Note that it absorbs huge amount of heat also (and some old flywheels have cracks due to this reason).

PS: One-piece casting + teeth ring pressed for cranking.

well that movie scared me off.. i know it would work just fine if done properly, but i dont know anybody that i could trust this much to do this. i guess you would pay cca 100 eur for a good job, so maybe its more sensible to just add some more to the pitch and buy a good aftermarket unit.

So i guess i would be more interested in new ones. What are the options?

3.7 kg seems a bit to light for daily driving, so i gues i would like something around 5 kg.. is everybody here using stock flywheels?

I'm using a 4.1kg JUN Chrome-Moly unit. I'm using it every day with no problems, but I'm also using a short-shifter. The revs do drop quickly which translates into jolty shifts if you don't shift quickly. But that's easily cured with letting the clutch go slowly (some slippage). It also comes in 3.6kg, but I'd say that's a bit too much.

i use the cusco flywheel (5 kg). I have it installed together with the complete cusco "coppermix" clutch kit.

It bites hard, and is still good for daily use.

compared to the stock flywheel, the change was really noticable, especially when downshifting with rev match. Just a short blip on the throttle is enough to get it to high revs. I love it.

I also think lighter than 5kg doesn't make too much sense, especially if the car needs to be slightly streetable still.
