retrodan, pro's and con's compared to what? Other hachi's?

Compared to other hachi's there isn't much to say, you have the 2 door version and the 3 door version, basically 2 door version of the car is slightly stiffer and would be a better base if you want a track car.
No structural difference between levin or trueno, just a different front.

There is a difference between early (zenki) and late (kouki) models, mostly cosmetic but the later models had slightly uprated technical parts, so a few HP more in the engine and offcourse a slightly stronger rear axle (the halfshafts are slightly thicker) which is interesting if you want to use her for drifting).

As for other differences between the models, nothing you really should concern yourself with, mostly optical and trim differences, especially on europian models. Offcourse on the japanese models you had power steering and A/C as optionals and the APEX models had somewhat better suspention. But basically all are the same and for the sort of things you are most likely contemplating, the minor differences they do have are going to be changed over anyways in your swap as I expect you won't keep the stock suspention anyways, you wont be happy with it if you're gonne put ca18det power in there.

As for ca18det conversion, there is a thread discussing the conversion a little down from this one. There are some other guys thinking about doing similar swaps and it has been done before.
