Porting, camshafts, 0.8mm metal head gasket, and shaving the head to keep a decent compression.
You can get few good tips here: http://www.billzilla.org/4agmods.htm#150hp Let just say 140hp are easy to get, after that it become a little bit more complicated and you need to spend more time (and money) to achieve what you want. |

Swapping in a 20v blacktop is probably cheaper than tuning a 16v.

Ivan141 Wrote:Swapping in a 20v blacktop is probably cheaper than tuning a 16v.Definitely not... The 20v engine + all the stuff you need like: water line kit (~600€ ?) distributor relocation kit (~400€ ?) cost WAY MORE than a pair of camshafts, an head gasket, shaving the head and a sandalone ECU (to achieve the 160hp) For me the only good point on the blacktop is the ITB's, things that you can add later on the 16v btw... |

Water line 600€? Damn bro, where are you shopping?
With some reserach i've got to know that the 16V system works on the 20V and you only need minor tweaks! The relocation kit, produced by SQ-eng is way cheaper than that! I'm going for a 20V! |

how to add power to AE86
Most people buy T3 products:
https://technotoytuning.com/toyota/20v4a...86-corolla $690 + shipping + fees. (and it was cheap compared to japanese brands before that) Sam is relatively new in the biz. Of course if I wanted to go for a 20v I will go for SQ products because they're cheaper but he know what he's doing (and quality matters more than the price, at least for me) But be aware that a blacktop never pulled out 165hp like advertised ! Most likely you will get 140/150hp... 3 of my friends have done this swap, none of them get anything above that. Another friend (who hate electrical stuff) puts FCR on his 16v + 256° HKS cams (and few other things) -> he got 164hp... I see only 2 reason to do this swap: ITB's without the trouble to tune an aftermarket ECU (that's a good reason for my point of view) and... initial D... |

MCN Motorsports also has a 20V water line relocation kit, for less money.

how to add power to AE86
I've seen blacktops (multiple) pulling around 140 at the wheels in FWD cars (on a reasonably fair dyno). The whole warning about them putting out less power than advertised is bullshit if you ask me (maybe running on some very crappy fuel or something).
The same day I saw those figures, robokill dynoed his medium built 4age (oem high comp + catcams + porting) on the same dyno and scored about 130 if I recall correctly. Water line kits are a waste of money when the same thing can be accomplished with an inexpensive coolant reroute on the back of the head, definitely not worth spending 600 euro's on. At the end of the day, it will be a nice reliable OEM engine with ITB's with decent power (nothing spectacular). With tuning, you just have to wait and see what you'll achieve, and hope nothing breaks in the process. I have nothing against it, but it's not the wisest choice from a financial standpoint with those target figures in mind. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |
