ignition problem HELP im NOOB!!!!
hey, im new. but i have a problem.

i took off my distributer, and when i put it back on and went to start my car.....nothing just a few random misfires, i kept trying till the battery died. i then realized my mistake. i dident fix the timing. so i did. #1 piston to highest firing point, distributer at #1 plug (i took the distributer cap off). i then went to start my car, with confidence........but nothing, it just kept turning till the battery died AGAIN. i recharged it, and kept trying, then after charging the bat. a few times i heard a small pop from the engine bay, i got out and seen a small cloud of white smoke. i dident see where it came from.

can anyone tell me what it was? or possibly why it wouldent start in the first place? maybe trying to start it in the wrong timing messed somthing up? maybe somthing happend when i took the distibuter apart to correct the timing?

i've been told that the pop was the ignition module. could that also be the reason to why it wouldent start in the first place?

please help me get my car running again. thank you.

Its a four stroke engine... Therefore you have to turn the engine untill the #1 piston is in the highest position again and then set the distributer at #1. The ignition is 180 degrees off so to speak...

You must have installed the distributor incorrectly.

You should be able to see a dimple in the camshaft when the engine is at top dead center. Just look trough the oil filler hole. If I'm not mistaken, the cams turn at 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft, so this top dead center indicator on the camshaft should only be visible on the compression stroke.
The correct way of installing the distribitor by the way, is to align a line on the shaft with a dimple on the housing, then insert the entire distributor while keeping it around the middle of it's adjustability range.

Turn your crankshaft until the mark on the pulley shows the 10 degree mark. Then just turn the key on the starter but don't let the engine crank. Only switch on. Unbolt the distributor but do not remove anything. Turn it till it ends either towards the dashbord or the headlights. Then put your ear near the distributor and gently turn it on the opposite side until you here a small tick tick. That's what the correct timing is. Bolt the screws and you are ready.

The pop was propably a missfire.
