interesting article
instead of putting a turbo or charger on the car what would you recomend. i want the car because i love them, but i also want it to have decnt power, in stanard form i dont think that would be the case, as i am looking to buy the car aleady built straight from smeone in japan most of the work will already have been done, there is this car on drift works but i dont like the kit thats on it i just dont think it looks right it has the widebody kit |

Hey Mr Yin,
it depends on what you want to do with the car, as different activities need different things. I think most people here would say that what makes the car special is the way it goes round corners, if you want to be fast in a straight line then this isn't really the best car, of course it can be done but there are other cars better. There are 2 ways of coming around the corner, 1. as fast as possible (grip driving) or 2. as sideways as possible (drift) now for 1, you don't really need lots of power, as well balanced lightweight car can corner as fast or faster than something with a big heavy powerul engine. This is what i enjoy with the car even if its through the countryside, just not needing to slow for corners and keeping your overall speed up, or going all out on the track. for drift, yes lots of power can help, the ae86 is considered one of the harder cars to drift becuase of its lack of power, but if you master drift in it then you will be able to transfer those skills to anything else, but not necesserily the other way round. My personal view is that the car does not suit forced induction, a free revving NA suits it better. The car does not need 200 bhp either, i'm tempted to tune mine to free some rpm, but power wise it has enough, the joy is useing that power to the fullest rather than knowing that there is as much as you could want under your foot. Is there a challenge in driving fast with a 400bhp engine, well not really. If i really needed the power i would put in a 'z' as that's still Toyota through and through, and i can enjoy some reliability with lots of torque and no lag, a turbo will always be custom and is as unlikely to be as reliable. If its a weekend car then maybe but for everyday, it would have to be supercharged in that case. If you find yourself a bit further north at some point i'd be happy to demonstrate, right lecture over, that's me done now, oh and of course HELLO |

This will be my first RWD so will b learning to drift in it i always liked this car (even before i seen initial d) (incidently does anyone know what engine is in that in Initial D Fourth Stage) I dont want mega power from the car just a decent upgrade, It will be an every day car not just a toy not sure wether to go for Levin or Trueno yet i gotta admit i love the pop up headlights, but hey impeed acceleration just a tad oh yeah and top end cheers for all input cause i am just a rank newbie |

To be honest, I could get my SR5 sideways rather easily (The only thing done to the car was a front strut bar, tokico gas shocks, and eibach lowering springs.). So it had somewhere near the stock 70hp, 75 ft/lbs, probably less. Granted I couldn't powerbreak or burnout for more then a second or two, it did get sideways around corners and I could outrun some friends in better cars as long as it wasn't in a straight line. The hachi is a marvel, it almost doesn't matter the power under the hood (granted, more is desired, but not required) as long as you have good suspension and a talented driver behind the wheel.
