Last week friday I did some cleaning job. Actually I wanted to solve my rubbing problem when I do this job.

First I try to find out where the tyre get rubbed, I see its rubbed to black plastic cover in the fender, suddenly.... come in my minds that Ivan told me once that I should remove the plastic cover and clean beside the cover.
So I removed them I was supprise what I saw... it was a bunch of mud or shits I dont know what to say between the fender (see the pics that u understand it). And in the same time also I see few rust spots on my cassis. Anyway its not too bad and need to be removed soon.

Anyway my rubbed problem are solved when I remove 2 bolts that fix the plastic cover to the fender Smile

Classic! Glad you remembered it.. This is a common cause of rust on many cars (including mx-5's)...

I really hope that you will start to feel that it is time to start thinking about giving this car a good waxoil or similar treating..You have a great oportunity of doing this with a mostly rust proof car, though it seems that even this short time was already enough to start some. Having seen what it can do on Ivans car, its really something that will fully repay itself in the future.

NoHachi,

Don't kid yourself, even stored in Hans garage the hachi will slowly get small amounts of rust.

But true enough, it'll mostly be surface rust that can easily be fixed by some sanding and a fresh coat of paint in places where you can't see it anyways so. but if you leave it alone now, within a year or two these will turn into crispy holes..

Oldskull, you may want to remove the fenders completely or atleast unbolt them at the bottom to get all the junk out. You'll deffo need to do it to get at the rust spots with easy.. We'll get some good 2K primer and paint for it so it'll last, no cheapo spray can gunkBig Grin You were already looking into waxoil/dinitrol if I am not mistaken so thats good.

Make sure you do the same check in the rear, but we're gonne do that anyways when we take the rear bumper off.

You should have seen the junk that came out of my RX7 when I took its bumper off this weekendBig Grin

@Nohachi and Mux: Yeah I really want to do the rust proof or what. But now I am saving money for it. Anyway can someone tell me what kind of paint (brand name maybe) and waxoil... I would do myself yes.

I am planning to remove the bolts under the fender but that time my "krik" was on the bolts, so I decide to do next time.

Oldskull,

Its easier to do when we have the car raised on the lift. Also need to soak those bolt in loads of WD40 (might want to do that now a few times, get them loose or they may brake when we finally try to undo them, I broke 3 of em on my RX7 and 1 on my hachi Sad )

Paint, not sure about a brand but best to go to a profesional auto paint shop and ask for a 2 component epoxy primer. Thats the best you can get but its f'ing expensive.

I bought some normal 1 component high quality primer over a year ago when I was painting my RX7 and I still have half a liter left over, we can use that aswell.
(for the RX7 I used POR15 for the engine bay which is very expensive but worked pretty good, and I've used this stuff for the transmission tunnel).

As for the normal paint, well this is something you need to deside, problem is that you really need to spray this paint and the hi quality paints are only really good for use with a paint gun and that means going into a paint booth.

If you paint a good thick primer layer with hiquality primer just using rattlecan paint should sufficiently seal everything up so thats your other option.

The winter salts will atack these kinds of spots at an enormous rate Mux. Its ok now, but this will become a problem. It IS a problem for every single ae86 in Holland that is being used every day...the rustproofing is just non-existant. You know yourself how frustrating it gets once the rust settles in..the only thing that will get the car decent again is a good cleanup and respray..even then its not guaranteed that you won't have problems again.
Ivan's hachi has been rustproofed once in the past I believe..seing the difference between the parts they havan't reached and the parts treated I would say its well worth the money.

Also you really want to do this once and do it well. A professional job will cost you a lot of money, but they will drill holes in the unibody to coat the inside of sills, remove petroltanks etc etc So that it will last some time. Doing it cheap will cost you in the long run.

I know it isn't as sexy as slapping tons of tuning parts onto your hachi, but once you get to into rust, just browse the forums to find out what kind of problems you will be in.
