problem again , about leaking half shaft bearing
I have another problem that I can't solve for now :
I have a leaking rear half shaft bearing ! It's so simple to change . So did I , but after one km it was leaking again ! I checked everything and foung nothing . The bearing is that as described in manual 2mm in . Gaskets are on , and I used a lot of sealant . But can't stop that oil leak . Did you experienced that before . Is there a solution? Thanks Filh Save the RWD cars |

problem again , about leaking half shaft bearing
Damn , I just use the wrong word I wasn't speaking about bearing , but about oil seal .
So to resume , I changed the oil seal (no bearing change ) from the rear axle shaft . I set it as it's requested in the workshop manual ( 2mm inside) and it's leaking . The oil seal is in contact with the bearing retainer . I use a lot of sealant , all gaskets are new and on , and it leaks . Just drove 2km and it's leaking again ! The oil level is correct too.... Check the breather on the top of the axle casing is clear and working.
Check for a 'groove' in the part of the shaft that goes into the oil seal. Good luck with it. An analogue brain in a digital World |

Breather is free (unclogged) .
The oil seal is not in contact with the shaft , it's the bearing retainer which turn inside oil seal lips . I have an idea I must check , and will leave feedback if I found the cause Phil Filh Save the RWD cars |

Ah yes Phil just could'nt remember which part of the shaft/bearing ran in the oil seal.
I have seen grooves worn into a crankshaft by an oil seal, changing the seal made no difference to the leaking at all. An analogue brain in a digital World |

I though about grooves made when removing bearing. So , I hold the shaft vertical and poored some petrol on retainer . But I couldn't see anyting coming the other side .

filh Wrote:I though about grooves made when removing bearing. So , I hold the shaft verticalThere are only three ways oil can get out... 1. Between bearing retainer and shaft. If the shaft has deep scratches or grinding marks from taking the old retainer off, then oil could seep thru. But you checked this with petrol and nothing leaked thru. 2. Between the seal and the retainer. Lip seal damaged by axle splines while fitting, or groove in sealing surface. Check the seal lip with a magnifying glass to see if there are any nicks or cuts. Usually you can feel them if you run your fingernail around the lip. Make sure the tensioning spring is inside the seal. 3. Between the seal and the housing. Look for deep scratches in the housing or any damage to the seal caused during installation. Cheers... jondee86 |
