question about rear axles

Hello,
I'm not drifting , only trying to do my best in Rally competition.
I have a question about rear half shaft .
Do you guys often brake that part ???
I don't have enough fingers on my hands to count the number I broke .....

I use Kouki rear axles , with a TRD 2way differential and a 4,7 gear end .
Engine power is about 135HP .

to solve your problems try put from daihatsu feroza rear axle have lsd and 5,3 gear ratio the problem is that the ae86 have small diameter gear the biger diameter les problems.

A smaller diameter ring gear is another problem as it makes the teeth on the gear smaller and more prone to failure. But it's a different problem then snapping axles (which also happens). Snapping axles is purely a question of torque (engine tq,ratio and tire grip) and shock loading. I think the transition from sliding to grip like you have with drifting and rallying is a big contributor.

a friend of mine broke his axles a few times too but he's doing hillclimbs on slicks and got ~100 more hp than you so I'd say, shock loading seems to be your problem considering your powerlevel is almost stock

I was thinking that the 2ways Trd differential could be the reason . As it works on decelaration mode??

Well many have 2ways and don't get that, also the TRD isn't particularly hard locking compared to some cuscos. Anyways seems a bit off.

Hi there,
For me final gear went countless times and halfshaft broke strangely only once. Also had enough of it, so now working on Previa's rear axle swap. Altezza's LSD fits bolt on to Previa's axle so it's possible to get a decent LSD for it. Axle is 11cm wider so arches will need some work too.
Hopefuly axle will get fitted next month, so I will update how it works If it works |

this is always a problem in rally ae86s in ireland, most guys convert to use ford atlas axle, much stronger option, we build and supply all parts required, check out here if you like http://www.grp4fabrications.com

We once used AE86's as school rally cars on a very rough
broken concrete surface, the cars had Kouki shafts and TRD diffs.
One particular car would break shafts regularly and upon close
inspection a very slightly bent axle was diagnosed.
A straight axle was fitted and the problem went away.

EP71. I know it a reliable solution. A friend just did that 2 month ago.
It's a heavy mod , and expensive too. And he got problems we the Escort axles from Quaife . He sent them back twice ...
He also got problem with the propeller shaft , unbalanced (bought from Burton )

Martynas : Previa are now becoming rare , and it's a heavy modification too.
What final gear ratio can you get for it , and what is the axle dia at the splines side?

Totta Crolla : Could be a reason , but I broke shafts from both side .
I drive that car for years now and I'm sure it's straight.
I think it's the way I drive the car that leads to all that breaking.
The last break : I came a little too fast on a 90° corner and had to dive inside corner.(deep cord)
The car was on the 2 left wheels, and the right axles (that was in the air )broke....
