start engine problem
I have this problem, when I start the car the electric engine will run for a few seconds. this happens only at cold start, it doesn't happen when the engine is warmer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnQMAvNIg30 it begin to behave like this after I replaced the battery. could it be related? which is the correct battery for ae86? thanks! |

It sounds like the starter is keeps spinning for a few seconds... Either your overrunning clutch is not working properly or the electric feed keeps going to the starter...

Starter gear might not be retracting properly.. No way to fix it except getting the starter engine out and replacing or rebuilding I think.

hit the starter a little with a rubber hammer or piece of wood and see if it's better - when this doesnt help you'll need to replace/clean/rebuild it like ivan said...

thanks for the help guys, I will try to hit it first and then clean it etc before replacing it. the odd thing is it happens only at the very first ignition. could it be related to the battery? because with the old battery it didn't act like that, the new one is 52AH 470A.

I was thinking if the battery is not correct it might cause a malfunction of the relay which closes the circuit for longer...makes sense?

robotype Wrote:I was thinking if the battery is not correct it might cause a malfunction of the relay which closes the circuit for longer...makes sense? shouldn't make a real difference realy as the system is capable of dealing with small (race) batteries and big ones equaly as long as the voltage stays within limits (usualy between ~12-14V +/- 1 on a regular battery). I had a similar problöem when the car stood still for a while in winter and temperatures were realy cold ~0-5° - if had to blip the throttle slightly right after starting the engine but it cured itself and only happens rarely now... on a mates car it was a little worse but cured as well with some tapping with the hammer to get it unstuck again.
