Engine question.

As I said earlier if the head has to come off again it'll be getting a total rebuild. If it doesn't I'll be removing the engine and rebuilding it this winter when the car is getting painted. At this point I'm hoping to get the summer out of it! After running back and forth to work and giving it a few highway runs. It's so far so good. Granted I'm not opening the hood until this weekend! What you don't know can't hurt you!

Well it's almost August and I'm still running. I drive it everyday and it's working very well. It burns a bit of oil because like an idiot I didn't change the valve seals when I had the head off in February. I'm thinking I may do an engine swap instead of a rebuild this winter. Which engines can I swap with my '85 Bluetop. I can't find a low mileage Bluetop and most other 4a-g's I find in Canada are for later gen front wheel drive. Which if any of the newer front wheel drive will fit in my '85. I'm sure this question was asked before but I searched the boards and can't seem to find the topic. By the way my winter ride is an '84 Toyota Van I'm currently getting ready!

Stick to ones with black lettering on the camcovers (incl black & red).. ergo: stick to TVIS engines and it will fit fine with some parts swapping (waterpump, mounts, alternator brackets, sensor mounts, thermostat housings).
The late model redtop 4age(smallport, no TVIS) is a nice engine though.. but needs a bit more work to fit.

I'm not afraid of a bit of work because I'm an auto mechanic by profession and it's a LONG winter! My concern is finding an engine that will work for sure. There's a lot of SilverTop and a few BlackTop available on ebay. Would either of these work? What else is needed? Harness, ECU? It'd be nice to know which one will work and then the hunt will begin.
